PREVIEW: Women’s Lacrosse Set to Begin Season on Road at Salisbury University

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women’s lacrosse is slated to begin the regular spring 2023 season on the road against Salisbury University, beginning this Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11:30 a.m. 

 

The team is set to host eight home events in the regular season. They were picked to finish second in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Spring 2023 Women's Lacrosse Schedule

As the home opener, the Mustangs host Gettysburg College before the end of the month. University of Rochester and University of Mary Washington are slated as home opponents for the Mustangs before spring break. Over the break, they travel to Arizona to face off FDU-Florham and University of Wisconsin – River Falls.

The team commences Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play on home turf against Lebanon Valley College April 1 at 1 p.m. with the conference postseason scheduled for May 1,3, & 6, 2023.

A LOOK BACK

The Mustangs finished the 2022 season with a 13-8 overall record and 6-2 in conference play. Advancing to the MAC championship, they received a bid to the NCAA tournament, winning against Meredith College 17-7 in the first round before falling to nationally ranked #6 Franklin & Marshall College 20-6 in the second round. 

THE TEAM

The Mustangs welcome 11 newcomers and 13 returners to their roster, including seven first years and a pair of sophomores and juniors. The team held an exhibition against Team Israel in preseason on Saturday, Jan. 28.

SCOUTING SALISBURY UNIVERSITY

The Seagulls finished the 2022 season 17-3 overall and 8-2 in Coast-to-Coast (C2C) Conference play. The Mustangs seek their first-ever win against the Seagulls to start the new season. 

On attack, The Seagulls return senior Erin Scannell, who notched 108 total shots last season against a .509 shooting percentage. She also led the team with six total game-winning goals. The Seagulls also return graduate student Emma Skoglund and junior Mary Hanzsche. Skoglund currently holds 130 career goals and earned IWLCA second-team honors last season. She finished the season with 26 assists, 31 goals, and 57 points. Hanzsche appeared in all 20 games last season, scoring 18 assists and six total goals. 

In the midfield, junior Leah Vilov, junior Meridith Price, and senior Riley Hartman return. Vilov appeared in all 20 games, notching 21 caused turnovers and 23 goals. Price appeared in 15 games and scored 15 points on 12 goals. She notched 26 draw controls, 13 ground balls, and caused eight turnovers. Hartman was out on injury last season, appearing in all games. 

On defense, junior Madeline Davis, junior Elizabeth Hesen, and sophomore Natalie Held return. Davis picked up 25 grounds and notched six caused turnovers. Hesen collected 22 ground balls, and caused seven turnovers. Held notched 21 ground balls and caused 18 turnovers.

This will be the 25th game the teams face faced each other. The Seagulls were named C2C champions last season and advanced to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals before dropping to TCNJ.  The Mustangs score an average 6.46 goals against the Seagulls, while they score an average of 15.83 goals.
