HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Stevenson Men's Beach Volleyball played three matches today to kick off the first-ever AVCA Collegiate Men's Beach Championships.
The Mustangs faced a tough Westcliff squad out of California, losing 5-0 to the Warriors. John Ferraro and Tim Flanagan forced their opponents to an extra point in the first set, and the pair of Kevin Kouchoukos and Tanner Laukhuff made their competition fight for three extra points before the set was ended.
Against Lincoln Memorial, the Railsplitters took a 4-1 win. Doug Hines and Jay Hyman were the lone duo to win, defeating Lincoln Memorial's Van Bears and Kutsch 21-17 and 21-15. John Ferraro and Tim Flanagan fought to three sets after winning the first, but ultimately fell by five points.
The Mustangs picked up their first win of the tournament against familiar opponent Tusculum University, doing so with a 3-2 final.
Ferraro and Flanagan won two quick sets, 21-11 and 21-15, with the fewest points allowed. Anthony Pezzino and Ryan Thenell took down their respective opponents 21-17 and 21-16 before Doug Hines and Jay Hyman won 21-15 and 21-18 to secure the Stevenson victory.
Kevin Kouchoukos and Tanner Laukhuff forced three sets, ultimately falling 17-15 in the third. Jack Braverman and Aidan O'Brien took their second set all the way to a 30-28 final in favor of Tusculum before ultimately losing by two in the third.
The Mustangs are back tomorrow at 9 AM to take on Webber International University in their fourth meeting of the season.
