Baily, Kimball and Joyner Tally Double-Digit Kills as Mustangs Suffer Setback at Mary Washington

Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. –  The Stevenson women's volleyball team (8-1, 2-0 MACC) suffered its first loss of the 2022 campaign, falling to Mary Washington (6-3, 1-0 C2C) 3-1. Set Scores were 24-26, 23-25, 25-23 and 22-25.
 
The Mustangs, who held the lead for most of the opening frame, jumped to an early 8-4 advantage on the heels of a Shannon Baily ace before a Mary Washington timeout halted the Stevenson momentum. Stevenson leveraged a 15-11 lead with a three-point rally sparked by another Baily kill. However, Mary Washington embarked on a 7-1 run to overtake the Stevenson lead and tally the set's first lead change with a 16-18 advantage.
 
The Mustangs responded with 4-1 run with Shannon Baily and Rileigh Kimball each notching kills. A four-point rally from the Eagles ensued to regain the lead at 20-23 before a Stevenson timeout would slow the Mary Washington momentum. The Mustangs tied the frame at 23 a-piece with a three-point rally which included back-to-back kills from Sarah. Straub and Rileigh Kimball. The sides traded the next two points before Mary Washington could link the final two tallies of the set for a 24-26 opening set victory.
 
Stevenson again earned an early set lead in the second set, jumping to an 10-6 advantage before the sided traded points to the 13-9 mark. The Eagles went on a 5-1 run to overtake the Mustang lead before a block from the duo of Molly Joyner and Haley Hoover knotted the set at 15 points a-piece. The sides traded the next six points before Mary Washington could string a pair of points together for the narrow 18-20 lead.
 
The lead was short-lived, however, with Giulia Viglietta sending home a kill followed by an ace from Kayla Vaeth to tie the set at 20. The sides again traded points to the 23-23 mark on the heels of a kill from Joyner and bad set from the Eagles. However, Mary Washington earned the final two points of the second stanza with a kill and a block to take the frame at 23-25.
 
The third set saw Mary Washington jump to an 7-11 lead before the Mustangs riffled off a six-point rally to take a narrow 13-11 lead with two kills from Baily and an ace from Haley Hoover. The Eagles responded with a three-point run to overtake the lead, but Stevenson answered right back with a 5-1 run to take an 18-15 lead.
 
The Mustangs added another 4-1 rally with back-to-back kills from Rileigh Kimball followed by a kill from Giulia Viglietta to enjoy a 22-17 lead. The Eagles made a charge with a four-point run to narrow the lead to 22-21 but the Mustangs earned the next two of three points to take the third set at 25-23.
 
The fourth set resembled the other frames of the match, with both sides fighting heartily. Stevenson came away with a slight advantage at the 11-10 mark. The two teams then traded three-point rallies, with Mary Washington taking most of them for a 14-16 lead.
 
The Mustangs mustered a 5-1 run on the heels of kills from Molly Joyner, Rileigh Kimball and Haley Hoover plus an ace from Kimball to take a 19-18 advantage. Mary Washington tied the frame at 19 a-piece before Hoover sent home another kill to spark a three-point run for the Mustangs to the 22-19 mark. However, Mary Washington embarked on a six-point run to finish the set with a 22-25 victory.
