Longball Lifts Mustangs over Hood

FREDERICK, Md. ­– Stevenson sophomore shortstop Amani Jones hit two homeruns as the Mustangs (12-21-1, 7-3 MACC) defeated Hood 8-2 (8-24, 1-9 MACC)  Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play at FCC Baseball Field.

Jones went 4-5 at the dish with two homeruns and four RBIs. Will Mesa also added a solo homerun for Stevenson as the only extra base hits for the Mustangs. Jonathan Brandt, Tommy Holcomb and Dylan Scott each added RBIs. Brady Power started on the mound for the Mustangs, going four innings with one earned run on four hits and striking out four.

Stevenson struck first when Tommy Holcomb reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the first inning to score Jonathan Brandt from third. Amani Jones and Dylan Scott each added RBI singles to give the Mustangs a quick 3-0 lead.

Hood notched their first run in the second when Alex Jenkins reached on an error to score Jacob Saylor.

With Holcomb reaching on a walk in the third, Amani Jones smacked a two-run homer for his second round-tripper of the season.

Will Mesa hammered his fourth homer of the season in the fourth to give Stevenson a 6-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, a pair of walks and a single scored a Blazers run to move the score to 6-2 in favor of the Mustangs.

In the sixth, Alex Russo reached on a hit by pitch and advanced to third on throwing error by the pitcher. Brandt knocked a single down the left field line to score Russo from third to score Russo, giving Stevenson the 7-2 edge.

Jones smashed his second homer of the afternoon in the top of the 9th to give Stevenson an 8-2 lead.

Entering the game in the fifth, Cameron Nebel pitched four scoreless innings, surrendering only 3 hits and striking out five on his way to his second victory of the season. Matt Kossey pitched the final inning for the Mustangs, forcing two fly outs and a groundout to seal the 8-2 victory for Stevenson.

  • Amani Jones' two-homerun day is the second two-homer performance this season for the Mustangs (Carricato vs Lancaster Bible Mar. 1)
  • Will Mesa is now tied for the team lead in homeruns with four on the season (Carricato, 4).
  • Cameron Nebel pitched four scoreless innings, surrendering only 3 hits and striking out five to pick up his second victory of the season.

What's Next

The Mustangs travel to Widener tomorrow, April 23 for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 12pm.
