Box Score 2 STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson baseball team (10-21-1, 5-3 MACC) earned a doubleheader sweep over MAC Commonwealth oppenent Eastern (10-22, 3-7 MACC) this afternoon at Sugar Field. Stevenson won the first game 3-2 in comeback fashion and led the second game wire-to-wire to pick up an 8-3 victory.
Game One
Both teams received strong pitching performances from their starters. Matt Reich pitched 7.0 innings for the Mustangs, giving up one earned run on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Billy McAdam went 3-4 at the dish with one RBI and one run scored for Stevenson. Trevor Smoot was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Matt Kossey threw a hitless inning in relief to pick up his first career win.
Eastern threatened to score the game's first run in the top of the second with a single from Sean Cortrell followed by a double down the left field line from Mark Cruser which reached the fence. Trevor Smoot dug the ball out and hurled it to Amani Jones who turned and threw home to Trent Smoot to tag out the sliding Cortrell. Reich squandered the threat, picking up his third strikeout to end the inning.
The Eagles threatened again in the top of the third with their leadoff hitter, Jason Hall, reaching on a single down the right field line. Hall eventually reached third, but Reich squashed the threat, forcing an inning ending groundout to second baseman Brandon Perillo.
Back-to-back singles from Billy McAdams and Trevor Smoot put the first runners aboard for the Mustangs in the bottom of the fourth. However, an inning-ending groundout smothered the chance to put the game's first run on the board.
Reich set down the next six Eagle hitters in order, picking up two strikeouts along the way. However, Eastern broke the hit drought a single in the top of the sixt. A one-out double from Garrett Friend plated the game's first run. Friend moved to third on a passed ball before a single from Matt McHale put the Eagles ahead 2-0. Reich retired the next two batters to stall the Eastern momentum.
Matt Kossey entered in relief on the mound to start the eighth inning. After walking the first batter of the inning, Kossey settled in with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning to keep Stevenson within shouting distance of the Eastern lead.
Elliot Schilpp led off the bottom of the eight with a walk. Alex Russo entered to pinch run and reached third by way of two passed ball. Jonathan Brandt reached on a walk to put runners on the corners for Billy McAdam with two outs. McAdam punched a ball to the right side, scoring Russo from third and moving Brandt to third. Trevor Smoot followed with a slow rolling single to third, scoring Brandt for the game-tying run. With runners on first and second, Tommy Holcomb knocked a ball to second to score McAdam, giving the Mustangs the 3-2 advantage.
Malcolm Edelin pitched the final frame the Mustangs, surviving two hits to preserve the victory for Stevenson and ending the game on a strikeout.
Game Two
Tommy Holcomb notched a pair of hits and three RBIs with a double. Jonathan Brandt went 3-4 at the plate in the leadoff position with an RBI and a double. Trevor Smoot tallied two RBIs while Billy McAdam added one RBI to account for the eight runs scored by the Mustangs.
Stevenson jumped on the board in the first trip to the plate with Jonathan Brandt reaching on a leadoff single through the left side. Brandt stole second before Tommy Holcomb ripped a base hit to left center to score Brandt from second.
In the bottom of the second, Brandon Perillo singled up the middle and Alex Russo reached on a bunt single to the right side. Jonathan Brandt knocked a double off the right field fence to score Perillo and put the Mustangs up 2-0. With one out and runners on second and third for Billy McAdam, the Mustangs put on the squeeze play to score Russo from third and taking a quick 3-0 lead.
Eastern cut into the lead with a leadoff double in the fourth from Draig Cooley followed by a single through the right side from Garrett Friend.
The Mustangs added a run in the sixth with a bases loaded passed ball to score Will Mesa. Tommy Holcomb smacked a double to right center to clear the bases, giving Stevenson a 6-0 lead.
Eastern notched their second run on a solo homerun to right center from David Hunsberger in the seventh.
In the eighth, Alex Russo reached on an error followed by Brandt reaching on a walk. Billy McAdam moved the runners up on a sacrifice bunt. Both runners scored on a single to right from Trevor Smoot to give the Mustangs an 8-2 advantage.
The Eagles notched a run in the top of the ninth with a long single from Sean Cottrell off the center field fence to narrow the Mustang lead to 8-3. Patrick O'Farell entered in relief for Carl Sansbury and promptly struck out the next two batters. A two out double from Brian Lang and a hit-by-pitch from Evan Banks loaded the bases for Eastern. However, O'Farell picked up a strikeout to give the Mustangs the 8-3 victory.
