TAVARES, Fla. - The Stevenson women's beach volleyball team went 3-0 in day one at the AVCA Small College National Championship at Hickory Point Beach Friday. The Mustangs swept, LaGrange, 5-0, and defeated Berry, 3-2 and Huntingdon, 4-1.
Against LaGrange, Emily Pellini and Shannon Bailiy won handedly at No. 1, 21-9, 21-9. At No. 2, Piper Connors and Taylor Jones also swept aside the LaGrange pair, 21-6, 21-8. Abby Bruce and Olivia Simon picked up a 21-5, 21-9 win at No. 3. The No. 4 and No. 5 pairs, won by default.
Against Berry, pairs two, four, and five won. At No. 2, Connors and Jones slid by winning, 21-13,21-15. Rileigh Kimball and Maddie Clouser won, 21-17, 21-19 at No. 4 and Kayla Vaeth and Hannah Naja won, 23-21, 21-16. At No. 1, Pellini and Baily fell, 19-21, 17-21 in a close match and at No. 4, Abby Bruce and Olivia Simon dropped their sets, 21-17, 13-21, 10-15.
Against Huntingdon, the first four pairs won their matches. Pellini and Baily registered a 21-14, 21-11 win at No. 1, Connors and Jones earned a 21-15, 21-12 win, and Bruce and Simon won, 21-15, 21-19 at No. 3. At No. 4, Kimball and Clouser were victorious, 21-14, 21-15. At No. 5, Vaeth and Naja fell, 8-21, 17-21.
The team is back for the final day of the AVCA Championship tomororw for their final pool play match at 9 AM against Hendrix. The team will then either play in the championship match or third place match both set for 1 PM.
