Box Score 2 READING, Pa. – The Stevenson baseball team (9-19-1, 3-2 MAC) notched two in the win column as it swept Albright (1-24, 0-8 MAC) in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Kelchner Field.
GAME ONE
Stevenson was firing on all cylinders in a 10-0 shutout of Albright. For the second time in as many outings, senior hurler Matt Reich paved the way to a Stevenson conference win behind a spectacular starting performance. Reich, who surpassed 100 career strikeouts in his last start, picked up right where he left off with an eight-inning gem.
Reich whirled a one-hit shutout under cloudy conditions in Reading, spanning eight dazzling innings with 12 strikeouts and just one walk. Albright, which dropped its 10th consecutive game, mustered its lone hit of the day in the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, Billy McAdam was one of three Mustangs with multiple knocks in the opening game. Trevor Smoot and Jonathan Brandt ripped two hits each as Dylan Scott scored a pair of runs in a balanced effort for the Mustangs.
Stevenson used big innings in the third, fourth and seventh to account for all 10 runs in what amounted to a complete effort. Following consecutive free passes, McAdam raked a double to right, scoring Scott and Trent Smoot for a 2-0 advantage. The Mustangs added another run in the third with Brandt reaching on an error.
Stevenson broke the game open in the fourth, plating four more runs for a comfortable 7-0 lead. With one away, Stevenson placed the next four players on base, kickstarted by an infield single from Brandon Perillo. Kyle Fratesi walked in the next Mustang plate appearance, later swiping second as part of a double steal. Two more free passes from Albright loaded the bases and later pushed a run across for the Mustangs with Perillo crossing home.
Following a strikeout, the Mustangs added to their margin with consecutive run-scoring singles from McAdam and Brandt, extending the lead to 7-0. In the seventh, Fratesi doubled home Perillo and Amani Jones before crossing home on a groundout to account for the 10-0 final margin.
Seth Hartman entered in relief for a scoreless ninth on the mound as Stevenson closed out the conference triumph.
GAME TWO
Stevenson received a strong starting pitching performance from Brady Power in game two as he retired the first seven batters he faced. Power pitched the first five innings, giving up one run on two hits and adding five strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.
Trevor Smoot continued his strong performance at the plate as the only Stevenson hitter to notch multiple hits in the second ball game of the afternoon. Smoot, Amani Jones and Tommy Holcomb all notched RBIs as Jonathan Brandt tallied two RBIs. The Mustangs were aggressive on the basepaths, totaling six stolen bases with only one runner caught stealing.
The Mustangs jumped on the board in their first opportunity with a double steal to score Trevor Smoot from third base for his first run of the game.
Trevor Smoot would cross the plate again in the third when Tommy Holcomb ripped a single down the line. Amani Jones sent a ball to left field to score Jonathan Brandt from third, giving Stevenson the 3-0 advantage.
In the fourth, the Mustangs added a run on Smoot's single up the middle, plating Kyle Fratesi. Jonathan Brandt smacked a single to the right center gap to send Will Mesa and Smoot home for his two RBIs of the ballgame and give Stevenson its 6-0 advantage.
Albright would break their scoreless inning drought in the fifth with an RBI double from Eddie Meredith. In the sixth, Billy Bean sent a ball over the fence for a three run homerun to pull the lions within two at 6-4.
Malcolm Edelin made his 15th appearance of the season and picked up his first save, tossing four scoreless innings and relinquishing only one hit while striking out two.
