Strong Pitching Moves Mustangs Past McDaniel

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. –  The Stevenson baseball team (4-9-1) returned to the win column defeating McDaniel by a score of 6-2 Tuesday afternoon at Sugar Field with strong pitching and defensive performances.

On the mound, starter Cameron Nebel went six strong innings picking up his first-career victory. In the outing, Nebel allowed only two runs on two hits, and struck out four.  After allowing runners to reach in the first and second innings, Nebel retired the next six Green Terror hitters in order with strong defense at his back. Nebel forced a double play to end a threat in the second and second baseman Brandon Perillo dove to snag a dying line drive that was a sure hit in the top of the third. The Mustang defense continued to stand stout throughout the game and did not commit an error in the nine-inning affair.

Stevenson struck first on the scoreboard with bases loaded in the bottom of the second when Dylan Scott placed a bunt back to the pitcher, plating Amani Jones from third. With bases still loaded, Brandon Perillo hit fly ball to left-center field deep enough to score Trevor Smoot from third.

The Mustangs added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Jonathan Brandt reached base with a solid single up the middle. Brandt stole second to get himself into scoring position, advancing to third on Tommy Holcomb's single to the right side of the infield. Amani Jones sent a fly ball to left field with Brandt tagging up on the play but the throw home was not in time to keep the run from scoring. Trevor Smoot then singled to right field, a bobble by the right-fielder would allow Holcomb to score from first base.

Stevenson added a run for the third consecutive inning, plating a run in the fourth. Dylan Scott reached base on a walk and stole second. A passed ball allowed him to reach third but the throw to attempt to get Scott out at third was overthrown allowing him to cross home.

McDaniel plated their first runs of the afternoon in the fifth when Jake Smith singled to right-center to score runners from second and third. Stevenson would respond, adding a run and extending their lead to 6-2 in the sixth when a balk allowed Kevin Carricato to score.

Patrick O'Farrell entered in relief in the seventh and sat down the Green Terror in order. McDaniel threatened in the top of the eighth when they loaded the bases with nobody out but reliever Malcolm Edelin ended the threat with two strikeouts and fly out to right field. Matt Reich pitched the final frame for the Mustangs striking out the first two batters he faced before giving up a hit to Jake Smith. A solid struck ground ball up the middle from Joey Hubinger seemed destined to extend the inning but Amani Jones swooped in to snag the ball and made a strong throw to first to end the game.
