Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, DC – Stevenson sophomore Amani Jones and senior Will Mesa each hit homeruns in the Stevenson baseball team (5-17-1) dropped both games in a doubleheader to Marymount (Va.) (17-3).
Game 1
Matt Reich went 5.0 innings on the mound giving up four runs on six hits and striking out seven. Amani Jones went 1-4 at the plate with a double, the only extra-base hit of the ball game for Stevenson. Jonathan Brandt, Alex Russo and Jake Cunkle all recorded RBIs for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs jumped on the board first in game one of the doubleheader, taking a two run lead in the top half of the first. Will Simmons led the game off with a single to center followed by Amani Jones' double to right center to set the table for Jonathan Brandt. Brandt was retired on a groundball back to the pitcher but not before Simmons crossed the plate for the first run of the game. Jones would score on a wild pitch to move the Mustang lead to 2-0.
The Mustangs added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Alex Russo singled to shortstop to plate Dylan Scott from third.
Malcolm Edelin pitched the first four innings without allowing a run. Marymount posted their first runs of the ballgame with a grand slam, taking a 4-3 lead with one swing in the bottom of the fifth.
Stevenson was quick to answer, tyin the ballgame at 4 runs a-piece with a single from the pinch-hitting Jake Cunkle to plate Dylan Scott from second. The tie was short-lived with the Saints plating the winning run in the bottom half of the frame on a wild pitch.
Game 2
Will Mesa notched three RBIs, going 1-3 at the plate with a homerun. Amani Jones smacked his first homerun of the season with a 1-5 performance at the dish. Dylan Scott, Jonathan Brandt and Brandon Perillo each turned in two-hit performances in the second game of the doubleheader.
Stevenson jumped on the board in the first trip to the plate when Aman Jones homered as the second batter of the ballgame. Marymount took the lead in the bottom half of the inning by stealing home and homerun of their own to take a 2-0 lead.
The Saints pushed their lead to 5-1 with a lone run in the third and two in the fifth off another homerun.
Will Mesa added a sacrifice fly to score Tommy Holcomb from third in the top of the sixth. Kevin Carricato added to the Mustang tally with an RBI on a fielder's choice to send Brandon Perillo home.
The Saints notched two runs in the seventh on a single to left to leverage a 7-3 lead. The Mustangs responded in the top half of the eight when Will Mesa homered to score the pinch-running Joe Apuzzo.
Marymount added their final tally of the ballgame with a one-out single to left to score a runner from first.
Numbers and Notes
- Will Mesa smacked his third homerun of the season while Amani Jones sent his first of the season out of the ballpark.
- Will Mesa's three RBI performance is the most in a single game this season for the veteran catcher.
- Brandon Perillo and Amani Jones each smacked doubles on the day and are now tied with each other with seven on the season for second on the team in the category (Holcomb, 9).
- The Stevenson defense did not commit an error on the day while turning two double plays.
What's Next
- Stevenson returns to action on April 2nd to open MAC Commonwealth play hosting a doubleheader against Alvernia. Game times are slated for 12pm and 3pm.
