Box Score DAVENPORT, FL – The Stevenson baseball team (5-14-1) ended a five-game skid defeating Clarkson (2-7) by a score of 4-3 in Davenport, FL Friday afternoon.
Will Mesa went 1-3 at the plate with a homerun and two RBIs while Brandon Perillo went reached base four times, going 2-3 at the dish and adding two walks.
Clarkson jumped on the scoreboard first with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first from Caleb Doyle.
Despite giving up the long ball to the first batter faces, Stevenson starter Kyle Pelligrino would settle in on the mound. Pellegrino surrendered only one more hit in the rest of his five innings.
Stevenson would add a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at one when Jonathan Brandt scored on Brandon Perillos's bases loaded walk.
In the top of the sixth, the pinch-hitting Jake Cunkle smacked a double to left center. Cooper Sancomb entered as a pinch runner for Cunkle and scored on an RBI double down the left field line to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
Carl Sansbury entered in relief for Pelligrino in the bottom half of the sixth and set the Golden Knights down in order with a lineout, strikeout and groundout.
The Mustangs added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a Will Mesa two RBI homerun. The insurance was cashed in in the bottom half of the inning when Joe Pagano notched a two RBI triple. With the Golden Knights threatening to overtake the Mustang lead, Patrick O'Farrell forced a groundout strikeout and fly out to end the inning, stranding the tying run at third.
Clarkson threatened to tie the ballgame in the bottom of the ninth, moving a runner to third with one out. Cameron Nebel would be summoned from the bullpen to halt the threat. Facing only one batter in his relief effort, Nebel forced a groundball to shortstop for Amani Jones to scoop up and tag second before hurling the ball to first for the game ending double play.
Numbers and Notes
- The Stevenson defense did not commit an error for the second straight game will also recoding three double plays in the ball game.
- Kyle Pellegrino earns his first career win, tossing five innings and only surrendering two hits.
