Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Catholic belted three home runs and rolled to an 11-5 win over the Stevenson baseball team in nonconference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Catholic (2-1) scored the first 11 runs of the game, placing plenty of traffic on the basepaths to build a comfortable lead. Peter Giombetti went 3-for-4 at the dish with six RBI for the Cardinals, one of three players with multiple hits for the hosts.
Stevenson (1-4-1) eventually settled in as Amani Jones and Trevor Smoot smacked two knocks each. Six pitchers saw time on the mound for the Mustangs with Brady Power getting the start.
Connor Fox, Patrick O'Farrell, Jake Pigeon and Trevor Smoot combined for four innings in relief. For Catholic, Chance Legere earned the win in relief of starter Cody Bosak.
Each of the first seven runs for the Cardinals came via the home run, including a three-run blast in the opening frame. Catholic added a pair of two-run shots, coming in the third and fourth, tacking on three more runs in the fourth for a commanding 10-0 lead. Giombetti homered twice, while Matthew Fisher added a home run for the Cardinals in the early going.
Kevin Carricato responded with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, the fourth total in the game, to get Stevenson on the board trailing 10-2. The Mustangs got the next two batters on after a Trevor Smoot single and a hit by pitch to Alex Ruso. Following a Catholic pitching change, Brandon Perillo grounded out on a sacrifice hit to the pitcher, advancing the two runners to scoring position. Jones ripped an 0-1 pitch to center for a two-RBI double as Stevenson trailed 10-4.
Catholic added one more run in the bottom of the sixth on a Stevenson effort before the Mustangs pushed across one final run on a Russo double in the ninth.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday, February 25 at Mary Washington with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch.
