Mustangs Fight Tough Battle at Widener, Come Up Short 2-0

Box Score CHESTER, Pa. – Stevenson men's soccer team fought a tough battle against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent Widener University, dropping the match to the Pride 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Hirschmann Field.
 
Junior forward Edson DeMata Ribeiro opened the match early with an off-post attempt 17 seconds in. The Pride's first goal came off the foot of junior forward Sean Fatiga with senior forward/midfielder Andrew Hurell on the assist. The second came from first-year forward Bryan Gaviria with an assist from first-year midfielder Ryan Toporowski. The Mustangs persisted offensively, putting 13 shots on the board in total against the Pride's 10.
 
With the Mustangs attacking early in the first half, the Pride answered with attempts from junior forward Sean Fatiga and first-year midfielder Max Hartke minutes later. Both teams had attempts in the 12th minute. Widener's attempt from Hartke was saved by first-year goalkeeper Nolen Olson-Warwick. Stevenson's attempt by junior midfielder Andy Portillo was saved by the Pride's junior goalkeeper Ryan Van Pelt.
 
The Mustangs earned a penalty kick in the 17th minute, but senior forward Tiago Silva's shot, was denied by the Pride's Van Pelt. The Mustangs ticked up five shots on the half against the Pride's six, but Stevenson remained  scoreless.
 
Fatiga scored the first goal for the Pride early in the second half at the 48th minute. Determined to equalize the match, the Mustangs  saw two attempts following the score. Van Pelt saved the  by Silva and DeMata Ribeiro in the 51st and 55th minute. The Pride netted the second goal of the match in the 69th minute, off the foot of Gaviria from Toporowski. In a last-ditch effort to get on the board in the 90th minute, Silva and Portillo attempted shots at the net, missing just past the post each time.
 
With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 4-6-5 overall (3-2 in conference). The Pride improve to 7-4-2 overall (3-0-1 in conference).
