Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Stevenson men's soccer could not overcome a late flurry, which saw Mary Washington notch both the tying and go-ahead goal, during a tough 2-1 road loss on Wednesday afternoon.
Stevenson (4-5-1) opened the scoring in the 17th minute, holding the lead for much of the day. Mary Washington (5-2-1) found the back of the net in the 81st and 84th minutes to escape with the win.
- Mary Washington opened the game with a bevy of corner kick chances, spanning the initial four minutes of the contest.
- Jay Smith found the back of the net for the first time this season, finishing off a pass from Alex Morales. Dylan Holy also logged an assist on the play as Stevenson moved ahead, 1-0.
- UMW posted shot attempts from three different players in the 24th, 25th and 26th minutes. Stevenson keeper Kristian Slaby stepped up to make his first stop of the afternoon on a Carter Berg attempt.
- Slaby snared two more shot attempts, one a header in the 31st minute and the other a look from Evan Fidler in the 33rd minute.
- Sean McDonald dribbled in and pushed a shot high in the opening moments of the second half.
- Berg countered with another chance for the Eagles, but once again Slaby was there to close the gap and make the save.
- Smith looked for his second gola of the afternoon, but had his header chance denied by UMW keeper Ken Kurtz in the 57th minute.
- Stevenson blocked two shots defensively in short order in the 66th minute.
- The Eagles continued to mount pressure and chances, eventually knotting the game at one on a Gabe Francesconi marker in the 81st minute.
- Minutes later, Abel Lewis netted the game-winner, rifling home a pass from Julian Schmugge in the 84th minute.
- UMW held a 10-2 edge in second half shots at Stevenson attempted to hold off the charging hosts.
- Slaby made three saves in each half for the Mustangs.
- Smith notched the 19th goal of his career at Stevenson, moving into sole possession of ninth on the all-time goals list in program history.
- Stevenson: The Mustangs are back home for Senior Day against Cabrini on Saturday, October 2 at 7:00 PM. The contest concludes a busy tripleheader at Mustang Stadium on Saturday.
