Mustangs Fall Short in Seesaw Battle Against Lycoming

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Stevenson dropped a hard-fought conference matchup with Lycoming, falling 29-28, after the Warriors converted on a go-ahead touchdown pass with just 10 seconds remaining in the game. 

Stevenson (0-4, 0-2 MAC) surged ahead 28-23 with just 1:35 left following a touchdown pass from Ryan Sedgwick to Steven Smothers. Sedgwick accounted for 326 yards through the air with three touchdowns, all going to Smothers. 

Meanwhile, Lycoming (3-1, 2-0 MAC) scored 20 unanswered points into the fourth quarter before responding with a two-yard connection from Elijah Shemory to Joey Guida to take the 29-28 lead. 

  • Cory Jones set the Mustangs up with great field position, taking the opening kickoff back 44 yards up the right side into Lycoming territoy. 
  • Stevenson marched 47 yards on its opening posession, capping the drive with an 11-yard scoring strike from Sedwick to Smothers for a 7-0 lead with 11:36 showing on the first quarter clock. Sedgewick also connected with Smothers for a 23-yard gain and found Jones for a 12-yard pitch and catch during the initial drive. 
  • The Mustang defense notched a pair of sacks during their first drive on the field, coming from Mario McIntyre and Don Jones, forcing an early punt. 
  • After a three and out for both sides, Stevenson got the ball back and moved the chains with a Smothers reception before the Mustangs punted the ball away. 

  • The Warriors got on the board with a 37-yard field goal, trimming the Stevenson lead to 7-3 with 8:37 remaining. 
  • Sedgwick found Smothers for the fourth time in the opening half as he weaved toward the hash marks for an 18-yard gain and a Stevenson first down. On a long third down, Sedgwick rolled to his right and placed a strike into the hands of Smothers for a gain of 27 just outside of the Lycoming redzone. 
  • Two more big plays, a 13 yard catch and run for Brandon Booze and punishing eight-yard jaunt for Kevin Joppy, set the Mustangs up at the one. Joppy walked in up the middle from one yard out for a 14-3 edge with 3:35 left in the half. 
  • Lycoming answered back on its next drive following a blindside block penalty with a 69-yard pass from Elijah Shemory to Tyjah During, bringing the Warriors back to with 14-10 at the 1:37 mark. 

  • Both sides traded interceptions on their openeing posessions of the second half, with Stevenson's Jacob Baytoff leaping to snag the ball out of the air with an acrobatic play. 
  • Lycoming converted a third and long with a pass to Leach, who zipped ahead and moved the sticks, before Shemory capped the drive with a one-yard sneak to put the Warriors in front at 17-14. 
  • Stevenson moved the sticks twice on third down, including an 18-yard pitch and catch from Sedgwick to Darian Littlejohn, placing the ball near midfield. Another gain of 18 went to Tylor Blake, who surged downhill for another first down. The drive stalled in the red zone after an interception in the endzone halted the Mustang's momentum. 

  • On the ensuing possession, Lycoming worked the ball inside the 30 before an Ian Plankenhorn field goal attempt clanged off the left upright. Lycoming forced a fumble, eventually recovered by Hunter Campbell, just one play after the missed field goal attempt. 
  • The Warriors put three more points on the board following the fumble with Plankenhorn drilling a 27-yard attempt, handing Lycoming a 20-14 advantage with just over 10 minutes left. 
  • Lycoming recovered a fumble on what appeared to be an incomplete pass to Littlejohn, taking over deep inside Stevenson territory. Again, Plankenhorn converted a field goal, this time from 41 yards out as Lycoming moved ahead 23-14. 
  • Smothers raced up the left sideline with a 38-yard runback as Stevenson began the crucial drive near midfield. Sedgwick threaded a pass to Littlejohn for a 20-yard play as Stevenson set up inside the Lycoming 30. On a third and short, Sedgwick found Littlejohn for a quick six yard gain. The next play, Sedgwick connected with Smothers, who tapped his toes along the back line for his second touchdown reception of the afternoon. Stevenson trailed 23-21 with 5:54 left in the fourth. 
  • The Smothers touchdown capped a drive that spanned 55 yards in just over two minutes for the Mustangs. 
  • Following an arrant snap, Sedgwick gathered the ball and delievred an 11-yard completion to Littlejohn. The next play, Sedgwick found Smothers for 18 more to the Lycoming 32. Sedgwick fired in an eight-yard bullet to Smothers, who made the catch in traffic for the go-ahead score as Brody Campbell added the extra point for a 28-23 lead with 1:35 left. 
  • Lycoming started its final drive on its own 31 and moved onto the Stevenson side of the field on a third-down targeting call. On fourth down, Shemory took off to the Mustangs' 19 before a pass interfence on the next play set the Warriors up at the two. 
  • Shemory rolled to find Guida inside the right pile-on for the go-ahead score. 
  • The Mustangs attempted to lateral the ball around with just five seconds left before the Warriors closed to end the game. 

  • With its opening drive score, Stevenson notched its first points in the first quarter this season. 
  • Smothers hauled in 143 receiving yards with three touchdowns, while Littlejohn added 103 receiving yards of his own.
  • Smothers tied a school record with his three receiving touchdowns, tying Jae DeShields (11/2/11), Devin Salisbury (9/24/16) and Preston Addo (9/24/16, 11/4/17). 
  • McIntyre added two more sacks for Stevenson on the defensive side, bringing his total to six on the season. 
  • Blake notched three receptions, all on the same drive, for a total of 39 yards. 
  • Ethan Joseph led Stevenson with nine tackles, while McIntyre had two sacks with 2.5 tackles for loss. 
  • The Mustangs committed five turnovers on the day and were penalized 11 times. 

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs open up the month of October with a road trip to Wilkes on Saturday, Oct. 2 at noon.
  • Lycoming: The Warriors host Delaware Valley for Homecoming & Family Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1:00 PM
