Stevenson football alum, Kobe Bolanos will spend his summer training for the New York City Marathon running for the Ulman Foundation this November. Bolanos decided to fundraise towards this foundation because of the countless interactions with people and their families battling cancer. "One thing that has always stood out to me, and continues to inspire me, is the positivity and optimism these individuals display while facing some of the toughest battles of their lives." stated Bolanos. "It has given me a greater perspective on my own life. What might feel like an inconvenience or a bad day for me can't compare to what these people and their families are facing."  

Growing up in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Bolanos knows what its was like to be supported every step of the way, including his step to attending Stevenson University. "I found that same sense of community at Stevenson, and now I'm grateful to have it again while living in Baltimore," said Bolanos. "Those experiences have shown me the impact of what a great community can do for someone, and I'm excited to bring those communities together to support the Ulman Foundation."

Bolanos was introduced to the Ulman Foundation through another Stevenson alum, Manny Essien, who Bolanos describes as a fellow friend, teammate, colleague, and alumni. 

The Ulman Foundation provides housing, support, and community for young adults navigating cancer, people who are often in the middle of building their lives and are suddenly faced with one of their biggest challenges. What stood out to me most about Ulman is their commitment to making sure no one goes through that journey alone. "I was able to meet the team over at their HQ in Baltimore, and I immediately knew it was an easy decision to support the foundation." Bolanos explained. "The passion in the room was felt from the second I walked in the front door. That team truly believes in its mission from the top down, is incredibly supportive, and will do whatever it can to help others. I also love the community they've built, because it reminds me of a lot of the communities I've been fortunate enough to be a part of throughout my life. Finding a good community is rare, and something that shouldn't be taken for granted."

After Kobe Bolanos finished his athletic and academic career at Stevenson, running became a competitive outlet for Bolanos. "I was always involved in sports and competing in some capacity, whether it was on the field or in the weight room," said Bolanos. "After graduating, it felt strange not having a structure or routine in my day that started with physical activity. COVID was also a big driver because everything was closed, and the only thing I could really do outside of the house was run."

When asked what else he would want people to know, Bolanos mentioned one life lesson he has learned. "Everyone has a platform." Bolanos began. "For some people, that platform might reach 10 million people, and for others, it might reach 10. No matter how big or small it is, don't shy away from leaning on it. You never know who you might inspire or motivate along the way. Small things add up, and when people come together, you never know how big of an impact a Stevenson alum can have."
