Mustang Men Clipped in Overtime Season Opener

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, MD. - Stevenson and St. Mary's (Md.) went back and forth throughout the evening in an exciting season-opening clash before the Seahawks ultimately cashed in for the lone goal of the night in overtime, downing the Mustangs by a 1-0 count on Thursday night.

Isaac Ekobo broke free and finished a pass from Jacob Breslauer in the 94th minute for St. Mary's (1-0). Jason Kahan and Dylan Holy posted a pair of shots each for Stevenson (0-1), while Matt Stellitano made one stop in goal over the first 54 minutes.

  • Both sides channelled the excitement of Thursday's season-opening matchup into a frenetic start. Ekobo launched the opening shot of the night for the Seahawks, coming just under two minutes in, before Kahan countered back with a chance in the third minute for the Mustangs.
  • Roshawn Panton had a chance turned aside with Holy racing back to clear the ball away as SMC continued the offensive pressure, recording two more shots at 6:34 and 9:33.
  • Following a wave of substitutions for the hosts, Owen Mostoller rifled a shot just high in the 25th minute. The pace slowed for both sides as Sevenson posted two more scoring opportunities while holding the Seahawks without a shot for the final 13 minutes of the frame.

  • Stellitano stonewalled Owen Smith on a penalty kick opportunity in the 54th minute as the physicality level increased for both squads. Kristian Slaby entered in goal for the Mustangs as St. Mary's registered four consecutive corner kicks.
  • Neither side could gain enough traction as the second half clock melted away until Stevenson closed regulation with a bevy of corners. Jay Smith entered the game in the 86th minute and nearly deflected one in, earning a corner for the Mustangs.
  • After three consecutive corners, Holy closed regulation by blistering a shot high in the 89th minute.

  • Ekobo followed on for the finish to hand St. Mary's the season-opening road triumph in the 94th minute.

  • Thursday's opener was pushed back a day, one of several schedule changes on the athletic calendar across the board due to inclement weather.
  • Head coach Graeme Millar's Mustangs showcased their depth to start the 2021 campaign, utilizing 13 different substitues throughout the evening.
  • Stats were nearly identical as Saint Mary's held a 7-6 edge in shot attempts.
  • The Mustangs' struggles against Saint Mary's continues as the Seahawks hold a 14-2-1 all-time advantage in the series.
  • Both starting goalkeepers, Stellitano and Matthew Kopsidas, exited the game in the second half following collisions.
  • A combined 23 fouls were whistled on the evening, with 15 infractions coming against St. Mary's.
  • Stellitano answered back with a penalty kick save after allowing a penalty kick goal during last spring's exhibition matchup with the Seahawks.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs face a quick turnaround, returning home to face Coast Guard on Saturday, September 4. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM from Mustang Stadium.
  • St. Mary's (Md.): The Seahawks face Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, September 4 as part of the Elmer Lord Tournament, held in Salisbury.
