Second Half Surge Propels Mustangs Past Catholic

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Stevenson men's soccer answered back from a halftime deficit in a big way on its way to a 3-1 road triumph against Catholic on Saturday.

Stevenson (4-2-1) posted its fourth win in the last five games, while Catholic was handed its second defeat of the season, dropping to 3-2-1. Sean McDonald and Pete Wickiser found the back of the net for the Mustangs in addition to an own goal.

  • Catholic took the early lead, less than 10 minutes into the contest, on a goal from Darius Siahpoosh, assisted from Paul Egan.
  • The Cardinal defense blocked shot attempts from Bryant Seivers and Edson DeMata as the Mustangs attempted to answer back.
  • Stevenson continued applying offensive pressure, including a header from Jason Kahan that sailed wide in the 38th minute.
  • Tiago Silva had another strong chance for the Mustangs, dribbling in toward the middle of the box before sending an attempt into the lunging arms of keeper Austin Coron.
  • The Cardinals registered another solid look as time ticked away in the first half. Lorenzo Carletti took a centering cross and pushed the attempt just over the crossbar with just over 30 seconds left in the half.

  • Stevenson wasted little time tying the score at one off an own goal on a long clear from Kristian Slaby that was headed in.
  • Another handball in the box lead to a penalty kick chance for Sean McDonald, who converted for the game-winning tally and a 2-1 Stevenson lead. It was McDonald's fourth consecutive game with a goal for the Mustangs. Jay Smith drew the penalty in the box, leading to the attempt for McDonald.
  • Catholic had two chances, one blocked and one saved by Slaby in the 57th and 59th minutes.
  • Both sides continued to trade chances up and down the field before Wickiser provided the Mustangs with an insurance marker. Finishing a crossing pass from Sebastian Boos and Iliass Zouita in the 77th minute, Wickiser posted his second goal of the season.
  • Connor Bailey sent a header wide in the 76th minute, accounting for one of the last quality looks of the contest for the hosts.

  • Despite trailing at the break, Stevenson held a 6-3 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes.
  • The Mustangs have notched multiple goals in each of the last five games, registering at least one point in each of those outlings.
  • McDonald posted his second consecutive penalty kick marker on Saturday.
  • Slaby finished with three saves in goal for the Mustangs, while McDonald posted a game-high three shots.
  • The Mustangs pushed their road record to 3-0 on the season.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs visit Gettysburg for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, Septemeber 22 at 4:00 PM.
  • Catholic: The Cardinals host Salisbury on Wednesday, September 22 at 7:00 PM.
