York Sweeps Non-League Doubleheader From Mustangs

STEVENSON, Md. - Visiting York (Pa.) College took both ends of a non-conference baseball doubleheader with Stevenson University Saturday afternoon at Sugar Field.  The Spartans took a 5-1 win in the opener before prevailing 5-3 in the nightcap.

  • York (14-2) scored two runs in the top of the first, taking advantage of two walks, a hit batsman and an error.
  • The Spartans tacked on a run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0.
  • Stevenson (8-6) grabbed a run in the fifth as Kevin Carricato led off with a single and scored on a two-out bases loaded infield single by Amani Jones.
  • A groundout ended the Mustang threat.
  • York padded its lead with single runs in each of the final two innings.
  • The Spartans outhit Stevenson 9-5, with five different Mustangs collecting singles.
  • Brady Power pitched the first four innings and allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits.
  • Jake Vanko pitched two innings of one-hit relief, followed by a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts by Ryan Smith. 

  • The Spartans belted a two-run home run in the third and added two more runs in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead.
  • Stevenson loaded the bases with one out in the fifth including a single by Phil Dao, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat.
  • The Mustangs scored three times in the sixth to close the gap to 4-3.
  • Alex Kidwiler worked a leadoff walk, and after an out, back-to-back singles by Carricato and Jonathan Brandt loaded the bases.
  • Dao reached on a fielding error by York that allowed two runs to score.
  • A bunt single by Will Mesa plated Brandt and made it 4-3.
  • The guests responded with Austin Denlinger's second home run of the game, a solo shot, in the seventh.
  • Both teams collected eight hits in the nightcap, with Mesa going 3-4 at the plate.
  • The Mustangs utilized five pitchers, with Patrick Sullivan taking the loss in two innings of relief of starter Matt Reich.

  • Carricato had a hit in each game of the doubleheader and has hit safely in six of his seven appearances.
  • Mesa recorded his second straight multi-hit game.

  • Stevenson returns to MAC Commonwealth play Tuesday when it hosts Eastern in a noon doubleheader at Sugar Field.
