Season-High 19 Runs Picks Up Split for Mustangs

STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson University baseball team scored a season-high 19 runs in game two of its MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with Messiah to pick up a split against the Falcons with a 19-5 win.  Messiah prevailed 8-4 in the first game of the afternoon Tuesday at Sugar Field.

  • Messiah (10-13-1, 8-12-1) grabbed a run in the top of the first following an error and a wild pitch.
  • Stevenson (11-7, 7-3) tied the game in the bottom half as an Alex Kidwiler double scored Amani Jones.
  • The Falcons scored a lone run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
  • The Mustangs got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth as a Jones groundout to the right side brought in Jonathan Brandt.
  • A home run and a triple highlighted the fifth for the guests as it plated three runs to take a 7-2 lead, then added another in the sixth.
  • Stevenson scored twice in the sixth, with Kevin Murray Jr. singling home Will Mesa, and Jones scoring on a double play.
  • Kidwiler, Brandt and Sam Ferreira each had two hits for Stevenson, which outhit Messiah 9-8.
  • Stevenson starter Matt Reich went four innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits.

  • The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
  • After being blanked in the first two innings, Stevenson put up crooked numbers in five of the final six frames, plating three in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, nine in the sixth and two in the eighth.
  • Kidwiler belted his fifth home run of the season with one away in the third to make it 2-1.
  • In the sixth, Stevenson collected five hits and also took advantage of four walks and a hit batter.
  • The Mustangs outhit Messiah 18-10, with Nate Perkins finishing 4-5 with three doubles and five RBI and Brandt 4-5 with three RBI.
  • Kidwiler also drove in five runs as he finished 3-4 in the nightcap, while Billy McAdam had three hits.
  • Jake Vanko improved to 2-0, working the first five innings on the mound, allowing four hits and two runs and striking out five.

  • Stevenson's 19 runs in the nightcap are the most in a game since a 31-5 win in the 2020 season opener against Gallaudet, and the most in a MAC Commonwealth game since a 19-10 win over Messiah on April 13, 2018.
  • Kidwiler extended his hit streak to five games.
  • The Mustangs' 18 hits in the nightcap are also a season high.

  • Stevenson travels to Messiah to complete its four-game season series against the Falcons on Thursday, with first pitch for the opener slated for 1 pm.
