Mustangs Salvage Split at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - The Stevenson University baseball team split a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with Hood College at the FCC Baseball Field Saturday afternoon.  The Blazers prevailed in a 2-0 pitchers' duel in the opener before the Mustangs turned the tables with a 9-6 win in game two.

  • Hood (3-5, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) scored the game's only runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • After the leadoff batter reached on an error and the next reached on an infield single, a single to right and a sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
  • Stevenson (8-4, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) had two on with one out in the top of the first after back-to-back singles by Alex Kidwiler and Billy McAdam, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the Mustangs' best chance to score in the opener.
  • In the third Amani Jones worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a groundout but was stranded.
  • Both teams had three hits in the seven-inning contest with Jonathan Brandt singling in the seventh for the other Stevenson hit.
  • Matt Reich was tagged with the loss despite allowing three hits and one earned run in his second straight complete game.  He now stands 3-1 on the season.

  • Stevenson struck first in the opener scoring a pair of runs in the fourth with two outs.
  • Kidwiler led off with a single then after back-to-back outs moved to third on a double by Tommy Holcomb.
  • A single to left by Brandt brought in Kidwiler and Holcomb.
  • The Blazers responded by plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
  • The Mustangs exploded for six runs in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead.
  • Will Mesa had a two-run single in the inning as Stevenson took advantage of four hits, two walks, two hit batters and an error.
  • Hood got a run back in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 8-4 contest.
  • A sac fly by Kevin Carricato in the eighth made it 9-4 as he brought in Kevin Murray Jr. who led off with a single.
  • The hosts pulled within 9-6 in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Kidwiler went 3-4 with two runs scored in the nightcap while Carricato, Brandt and Mesa had two hits apiece as the Mustangs outhit the Blazers 12-10.
  • Carricato, Brandt and Mesa each drove in two runs.
  • Mustang starter Jake Vanko went four innings and allowed four hits and three runs (two earned).
  • Jackson Mayo tossed a hitless inning of relief for the win, while Jake Boden had a hitless ninth to nail down the save.

  • The three hits allowed by the Mustangs in the opener were a season low.
  • Stevenson's 12 hits in the nightcap were its seventh double-digit hit performance of the season.

  • Stevenson and Hood complete their four-game series Monday with a noon doubleheader at Sugar Field.
