Mustangs Halve Twinbill With Albright Sunday

READING, Pa. - Stevenson University and Albright College split a MAC Commonwealth baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Kelchner Field.  The Lions recorded a 13-4 win in the opener before the Mustangs bounced back with a 7-3 win in the nightcap.

  • Stevenson (7-3, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run single by Jonathan Brandt that plated Kevin Murray Jr. and Alex Kidwiler.
  • Kevin Carricato led off the second with a single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error.  He scored on a single by Michael Smell.
  • Albright (1-8, 1-7 MAC Commonwealth) got two runs back in the bottom of the second then tied the game with another run in the third.
  • The Lions homered twice in an eight-run fourth as it collected seven hits and took an 11-3 lead.
  • Carricato belted a solo home run in the sixth for the Mustangs' final run of the opener.
  • Carricato had two of Stevenson's six hits in game one as the guests were outhit 18-6.
  • Kidwiler was tagged with the loss, going the first 3.1 innings, striking out three.

  • The Mustangs pushed across six runs with two outs in the top of the second inning.
  • An Amani Jones single brought in Brandt and Tommy Holcomb and moved Alex Russo to third.
  • After Jones stole second, Murray worked a walk to load the bases.
  • Kidwiler took a 2-0 pitch and blasted it to center field for a grand slam and his fourth home run of the weekend.
  • Carricato led off the third with a double and after stealing third, scored on a Holcomb single.
  • Albright tallied a run in the fourth and brought in two in the sixth.
  • Malcolm Edelin picked up his first win of the season, allowing seven hits and one run in five innings while recording a pair of strikeouts.
  • Jake Boden allowed three hits and struck out four over the final three innings to pick up the save.
  • Holcomb and Jones each had a pair of hits as the Mustangs were outhit 13-7.

  • The Mustangs stole a season-high eight bases in game two after stealing seven in the opener.  Stevenson was 15-17 (88.2%) on stolen base attempts on the afternoon.
  • Kidwiler finished the series 5-11 with four home runs, eight RBI and a 1.545 slugging percentage.
  • Carricato was 5-10 at the plate against the Lions appearing in the last three games with three doubles and a home run.

  • Stevenson opens a four-game weekend series with Hood next Saturday with a pair of games in Frederick before hosting the Blazers for a noon doubleheader at Sugar Field on Sunday, March 28.
