Mustangs Pick Up 1-1 Draw at Eastern on Saturday

Box Score

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. -- Stevenson women's soccer struck first in the opening half before Eastern responded with a late game-tying marker, forcing overtime in a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon at Olsen Field.

Stevenson (3-4-5, 1-0-1 MAC Commonwealth) posted the opening goal of the day late in the first half as Samantha Wilson notched her second of the season. Eastern (6-4-2, 1-1-1 MAC Commonwealth) mounted pressure in the second half, eventually cashing in with a Cassie Avanek goal in the 89th minute to salvage a point in the conference matchup. Keegan Caffrey collected her 300th career save with five more stops in goal for the Mustangs.

  • Stevenson posted some early possession, earning an early corner before notching a pair of shots from Kennedy Cash and Cassidy Butler in the 7th minute.
  • Cash, who scored last time out for Stevenson, registered another shot as Eastern keeper Emily Honig reached down for her first save of the day in the 8th minute.
  • Off a foul and set peice, Stevenson maintained the ball as Taylor Reider eventually lifted a shot high in the 10th minute. Allison Arters provided another quality look, just pushing an attempt wide in the 12th minute.
  • Caffrey charged in for a low save on Gabi Hollinger in the 21st minute. Off a foul just outside the box, Eastern sent the ensuing free kick wide left in the 28th minute.
  • Wilson finished off the lone goal of the first half, burying a feed from Kelly Schultz for a 1-0 edge in the 39th minute.
  • Stevenson closed off any shooting lanes defensively heading into the intermission, blocking a shot with just under one minute remaining in the frame.

  • The Eagles recorded a few early looks in the second half as Caffrey hauled in the attempt in the 59th minute.
  • As both sides played in the midfield, Eastern had a great look not materialize on a cross that just missed its mark with around 24 minutes left in the half.
  • Ericka Kitzinger fired a shot left in the 74th minute. Off a turnover in the midfield, Kitzinger raced ahead before playing it left to Cash, who gathered and sent one to the waiting Isabella Beck as the shot sailed wide in the 77th minute.
  • Eastern continued in search of the equalizer, but could not solve the Stevenson defense as the Mustangs posted another blocked shot in the 87th minute. The aggressive Eagles continued pressing, ultimately knotting the game with a high shot in the 89th minute.

  • Reider blocked an early shot from Eastern, resulting in a corner chance for the Eagles.
  • Butler pasted one off the crossbar in the 96th minute off a long free kick.
  • Schultz had room on the right side, playing a looping pass to Arters, who could not get a touch on the back-post look as the ball sailed out of the box.
  • Caffrey made her 300th career save on a shot from Madelyn Mullen in the 99th minute.
  • Chances became more limited during the second overtime frame. A late handball provided Eastern with a set piece in the middle about 10 yards outside the box as the Stevenson defense dropped back to insulate Caffrey.

  • The Mustangs have recorded at least one point in five consecutive games.
  • Stevenson held a 16-12 edge in shots, placing just four on goal.
  • Butler and Cash fired three shot attempts each on Saturday.
  • Eastern continued its stretch of earning at least a point at home, moving its record to 5-0-2 at Olsen Field.
  • Stevenson used its depth, making frequent substitutions to keep players fresh, particulary into the second half.
  • Wilson logged her second goal of the season, while Schultz picked up her first point of the season with the helper.
  • Stevenson posted the lone corner of the match in the opening half, with neither side earning one for the majority of regulation. Eastern had a flurry of corners over the final few minutes, including one that eventually set up the game-tying tally.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs host Widener for another conference matchup on Tuesday, October 12 at 7:00 PM.
  • Eastern: The Eagles travel to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, October 12 at 4:00 PM.
