Mustangs Upset Falls Short at No. 3 Elmira, 2-1

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Annie Smyth-Hammond finished with 45 saves, one shy of her career-high, while sophomore Nikki Kendrick netted her seventh goal of the season as the Mustangs upset bid fell short versus No. 3 Elmira, 2-1, in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest Saturday afternoon at Murray Athletic Center.

  • The Mustangs (5-6-2, 3-3-0 UCHC) were whistled for a penalty just 2:21 into the contest but Smyth-Hammond stopped all four shots on net while sophomore Tea Ferrara recorded a blocked shot.
  • Just 2:18 after the Soaring Eagles (9-2-2, 5-1-0 UCHC) power play expired, the hosts were called for their first penalty of the game.
  • Stephanie Martin saved the only shot on net during the player advantage while Elmira recorded three blocked shots, including a pair by senior Allyson Barlow.
  • Elmira recorded the final nine shots on net of the period with all nine turned aside by Smyth-Hammond.

  • Just prior to the midway point of the period, the Soaring Eagles went on their second power play of the game but it was cut short as Elmira was whistled for a penalty, 1:02 into the advantage.
  • Smyth-Hammond made a pair of saves during four-on-four play while the Mustangs did not put a shot on net during their 58-second power play.
  • Stevenson had a full two-minute power play at the 14:11 mark and fired four shots on net, but all five were saved by Martin.
  • With 2:22 remaining in the period Kendrick put the visitors on the board, scoring on a scrum in front of the net. Ferrara and sophomore Ally Gibson picked up the assists.
  • In the closing second of the period, Devyn Gilman fired a shot that hit off pipe.

  • Elmira tied the game at, 1-1, just 23 seconds into the period as Morgan Mordini beat Smyth-Hammond for the first time.
  • Following three consecutive blocked shots, including a pair by Gibson, the Mustangs earned a power play attempt at the 7:48 mark.
  • The Soaring Eagles recorded the only shot on Stevenson's power play with Smyth-Hammond making the stop on the shorthanded attempt.
  • Just past the midway point of the period, Elmira went on the power play and needed just 45 seconds before Emma Crocker gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
  • A slashing penalty at the 14:01 mark gave the Mustangs another power play but Martin stopped back-to-back shots, Stevenson's final shots on net.

  • Elmira outshot Stevenson, 47-15.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Soaring Eagles finished 1-for-3.
  • Kendrick's goal gave Stevenson its first-ever lead against Elmira, who is 8-0-0 all-time against the Mustangs.
  • It is also the fewest goals the Mustangs have allowed in their eight meetings versus the Soaring Eagles, who have been ranked in all eight meetings.
  • For Smyth-Hammond, it is her third career 40-save performance. The senior is now just 34 saves shy of 1,000 for her career.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Sunday, January 19 when the Mustangs travel to William Smith for a UCHC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs are back home on Friday, January 24 when the team hosts a UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest versus Wilkes. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
