Late Penalty Kick Lifts St. Mary's (Md.) Over Mustangs

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer senior Marissa Inglisa tied the game in the 84th minute but St. Mary's (Md.) converted a late penalty kick to hold on for a 2-1 non-conference victory over the visiting Mustangs Saturday evening at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.

  • The Seahawks (2-2-0) put the early pressure on, firing three shots on the net in the first four minutes but Caffrey kept all three in front.
  • St. Mary's (Md.) had five total shots in the opening 5:17 of the contest.
  • The Mustangs (1-2-0) had the next three shots, including a pair by senior Brianna Christie, but none were on frame.
  • Junior Karissa Paglione recorded the visitors only shot on net in the half in the 41st minute.

  • After just one shot on the net in the first half, the Mustangs recorded two shots on net in the opening 10 minutes to start the second.

  • With 6:04 remaining in regulation, senior Alayna Roesener played a through ball from midfield to Inglisa, who beat her defender and sent a rolling shot to the far left post to tie the game.
  • The Mustangs were whistled for a foul in the box and Emmey German got Caffrey leaning the wrong way and put the game-winning goal to the high left.

  • Stevenson held a slight 11-10 edge in shots and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Caffrey finished with six saves while Christie had a game-high four shots.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, September 11 when the Mustangs travel to Catholic for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
