Mustangs Back in Win Column With Victory at Marymount (Va.)

Box Score

RARLINGTON, Va. - Highlighted by the first career goals by freshmen Lezah Gannon and Cassidy Butler, the Stevenson women's soccer team snapped its seven-game winless streak with a 3-2 non-conference victory over Marymount (Va.) Saturday afternoon.

  • In the opening minutes of the contest senior Brianna Christie crossed the ball into the box that found freshman Emily Rusk on the back post but Rusk sent the shot wide.
  • The Saints (1-7-1) put their first shot on net in the 11th minute but the week dribbler was saved by junior Keegan Caffrey.
  • After a shot by junior Allison Arters was blocked, Marymount (Va.) attacked the other way and a shot by Karen Reyes sailed over the head of Caffrey and hit off the post with the assistant refree ruling it across the goaline and in for the go-ahead score.
  • In the 27th minute, the Saints had a free kick from 40 yards out that landed at the feet of Gretel Bonilla who sent her shot wide right of the net.
  • The Mustangs (2-6-1) tied the game in the 35th minute as senior Marissa Inglisa sent a low cross in that classmate Alayna Roesener flicked in on the near post.
  • With 11 seconds remaining in the half, Stevenson took a 2-1 lead as Roesener flicked a bouncing ball ahead for Gannon who placed a right footed shot low to the far left post.

  • The Saints tied the game in the 59th minute as Reyes hit a low right footed shot from the top of the box just inside the left post.
  • In the 70th minute, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead as Butler turned and shot on a bouncing ball in the box that beat Maia Pappadakis inside the right post.
  • Stevenson held Marymount (Va.) to just one shot in the second half.

  • Stevenson outshot Marymount (Va.), 17-5, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The first Stevenson goal snapped a 310:18 scoring drought for the Mustangs.
  • It is the third goal of the season that Inglisa and Roesener have connected on with Roesener assisting on both of Inglisa's goals this season.
  • Gannon's goal gave the Mustangs their first lead of the season.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, October 2 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Immaculata beginning at 7:00 p.m.
