Mustangs Unable To Slow Down Knights Hot Bats

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - A day after earning a split of a doubleheader against MAC Commonwealth leading Arcadia University the Stevenson baseball team was not able to slow down the hot-hitting Knights as they took what was a 5-3 game through three to a 16-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Sugar Field.

  • Arcadia (17-8, 10-2 MAC Commonwealth) wasted no time taking the lead against graduate student Joe Thompson when the first two men reached safely to bring up Sean Carew.
  • He made it 2-0 with a double over the left fielder's head.
  • After a Dylan Towey single put men on the corners with one down Trevor Mattson picked up an RBI base hit to left for a 3-0 edge.
  • Then with two gone Nick Ponente added the final run of the frame with a knock back up the box to plate Towey.
  • Stevenson (13-13, 6-6 MAC Commonwealth) went down in order in the home half on two strikeouts and fly out versus Knights starter Joel Bartoni.

  • The Mustangs pulled one back in the last of the frame when senior Zachary DeLong trimmed it to 4-1 by smashing the ball over the left-field fence.
  • Freshman Austin Taylor was safe on a fielder's choice and sophomore Blake Loewe reached on an error by Mattson at third putting two men on with one out to go.
  • Unfortunately, sophomore Nate Perkins grounded out to short to end the threat.

  • Phil Pierfy was hit by a Thompson pitch to put the leadoff hitter on.
  • The next two men were set down to bring up Anthony Zupito who extended the advantage to 5-1 with a double to left-center driving in Pierfy all the way from first.
  • Senior Matthew Kerber reached on error to begin the bottom of the inning, which was followed by a single for junior Kevin Murray Jr.
  • After a walk to senior backstop Jordan Moore, the next hitter Delong picked up two more RBIs with a knock through the left side driving home both Kerber and Murray cutting it to 5-3.
  • Sophomore Thomas Holcomb and Taylor flew out to retire the side.

  • The guests added two more in the top half thanks to RBI singles from Zupito who plated Pierfy who reached on a base hit.
  • Ponente followed that with a run-scoring hit to center making it 7-3.
  • That was the end of the day for Thompson as he was replaced by junior Brady Helinski.
  • He got Zachary Sekelick to fly out to Holcomb in left to end the attack.
  • Stevenson got a baserunner during their at-bat thanks to a Moore walk but he was forced out at second on a fielder's choice to end the frame.

  • The Knights stretched the lead to 10-3 as Mattson sent a two-run shot over the left field wall and Brian Gillen came up with an RBI single scoring Sekelick after he was hit by a pitch.
  • New pitcher Mitch Blake set down the hosts in order in the bottom part of the stanza.

  • Singles for Pierfy and Towey along with a walk for Carew loaded the bases for Matt Ernst who plated one with a hit to left.
  • Ponente earned a one-out bases loaded free pass for an RBI and Gillen singled to left-center driving in a pair for a 14-3 lead.
  • A single for freshman Trent Smoot and two-bagger for classmate Liam Elliffe put two in scoring position for senior pinch hitter Connor Wasilnakbut he struck out for the second out of the frame.
  • Fellow senior Anthony Millington was next, unfortunately, he grounded out to shortstop.

  • Ernst capped off the scoring for the day with a two-run single to center field.
  • With their last chance, the Mustangs were unable to muster a baserunner as Blake posted a one-two-three inning.

  • W: Joel Bartoni (6-0), L: Joe Thompson (2-4), S: Mitch Blake (3)
  • Thompson took the loss going 4.2 innings giving up seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits and fanning three.
  • DeLong was 2-3 with three RBIs, a run scored and a home run (number two of the season).  He now has a hit in three of the last four games.
  • Murray, Elliffe, and Smoot each had a single hit, with Elliffe recording a double.
  • Bartoni got the win last six frames issuing three hits allowing three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.
  • Nine Knights hitters recorded multi-hit games.
  • It was the third game of the season where the Mustangs recorded five hits.
  • The 16 runs given up were the most since March, 31 2018 in a 21-4loss to Albright.

  • The Mustangs will not have a lot of time to dwell on the defeat as they are right back in action tomorrow, April 8 when they travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to take on the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College in non-conference action at 3:30pm.
