Big Fourth Inning Propels Mustangs To Win In Rematch With Catholic

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson baseball team got RBIs from four different players and rallied back from an early 1-0 deficit before using a five-run fourth inning to catapult themselves to an 8-1 non-conference victory over the Catholic University Cardinals on Monday afternoon at Sugar Field.  With the win, the Mustangs got revenge for an 8-5 defeat suffered to the Cardinals in the nation's capital on April 10.

  • Each team recorded singles in the opening frame, but double plays induced by both starting pitchers allowed for no damage to occur.

  • Catholic (23-11) struck first against freshman Sam Downs as Nolan Lundholm led off with a double to deep right field.  Then after the next two batters were retired on a groundout and a strikeout which did move the runner to third.
  • That brought Will Pyne to the dish and he reached on a fielding error by the home shortstop scoring Lundholm for the 1-0 lead.  Peter Giombetti whiffed on strike three for the final out.
  • Stevenson (17-19) got a one-out single from senior Jordan Moore, but a strikeout and fielder's choice kept the score where it was.

  • The Cardinals put men at second and third with one away, but strikeouts by Pyne and Giombetti ended the threat.
  • Senior Matthew Kerber began the frame with a single and then went to second on an error by the visiting shortstop which also allowed classmate Zachary DeLong to go to first.  J
  • Junior Alex Kidwiler would complete loading the bases by reaching on a fielder's choice to pitcher David Gately, during the play Gately overthrew the third baseman trying to force out Kerber.
  • The Mustangs then tied the game on a walk to Moore, before grabbing the edge with a single by sophomore Thomas Holcomb scoring DeLong and Kidwiler coming in on the throw.
  • A passed ball moved two more into scoring position for senior Michael Rhodes who picked up a base hit to left driving in one.  He stole second two batters later and on the throw down by the catcher Holcomb raced home for the 5-1 lead.

  • Junior Brady Helinski took over for Downs and ran into some trouble allowing a pair of walks, but was able to strand a pair when Tighe Watson was forced out on a fielder's choice hit into by Connor Sullivan.
  • Nick Dziuba was the second pitcher brought in from the Catholic bullpen and he would surrender a pair of runs.  First, he hit freshman Billy McAdam with a pitch then after a single by Kerber moved him to second he scored when he stole third base and an errant throw from the catcher extended the advantage to 6-1.
  • Later in the frame with Kerber at third and Moore at the dish, a wild pitch from Dziuba made it 7-1.

  • The Mustangs capped off the scoring when junior Kevin Murray Jr. plated Rhodes who reached on a bunt single with one out.

  • Junior Jake Vanko would face a bases-loaded situation in the final frame but allowed no runs as Ryan Tracy hit into a fielder's choice which forced out Sullivan to end the game.

  • W: Sam Downs (3-1), L: David Gately (4-3)
  • Downs earned the victory with six innings pitched allowing one run on three hits and fanned four.
  • The Mustangs bullpen went the final three frames throwing shutout baseball giving up just three hits.
  • Murray, Kerber, and Rhodes all went 2-4 and combined for three runs scored and two RBIs.
  • McAdam, Moore, and Holcomb each added a hit as well.
  • Gately suffered the loss lasting 3.2 innings giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits.
  • Bailey Lewis led the Cardinals at the plate going 2-4.

  • The Mustangs will wrap-up the non-conference portion of the schedule on Thursday, April 25 when they travel to Center Valley, Pennsylvania for a matchup with the DeSales University Bulldogs at 6pm.
