Box Score 2 STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson baseball used a five-run sixth and a complete game effort on the mound from senior James Wiercinski to rally back from a 4-2 deficit to win game one 7-5, however, in the second contest of the day the Mustangs never led as Nicholas Marotta went distance for the visiting Alvernia University in a 9-5 setback resulting in a split of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Sugar Field.
- Stevenson () grabbed the early lead against visiting pitcher Zack Landy as junior Kevin Murray Jr. reached on an infield single to the second baseman and then stole second.
- Then with one gone senior Matthew Kerber roped a double down the left-field line for the 1-0 lead as Murry scored. After a free pass to junior Alex Kidwiler senior Jordan Moore popped out to first to end the frame.
- Alvernia () got the leadoff man on in the second thanks to an error and then went to second on a failed pickoff by Wiercinski, but he would get no further as Alex Salesky and Grant Hackett were set down to end the threat.
- For the second straight frame, the Mustangs first hitter reached on an infield hit as sophomore Thomas Holcomb was safe. He advanced on a sac bunt freshman Austin Taylor.
- A balk moved Holcomb to third before sophomore Nate Perkins drove him in with an infield single to make it 2-0. A walk and fielder's choice would load the bags, but senior Zachary DeLong went down on strikes to end the attack.
- The Golden Wolves got their first hit of the game in the third on a single up the box by Joe Ginder, however, Wiercinski induced an inning-ending double play off the bat of Ian Shaffer.
- With the score still 2-0 entering the fifth the visitors cut into the deficit as singles for Colin Rieger and Ginder led to Salesky scoring after he reached on a fielder's choice to pull within 2-1.
- Alvernia took the lead in the sixth with three runs coming home as singles by Mike Cirilli and Nathan Sides scored when Rieger doubled to deep left-center. A sac fly off the bat of Franco Esposito gave the guests a 4-2 edge through five and a half.
- The Mustangs responded with five in their half. Perkins began the frame by being hit by a pitch from Landy. Michael Griffin came into pitch and conceded base knocks to Murray and freshman Billy McAdam leading to Perkins coming home.
- Cirilli then took over on the mound and gave up an RBI single to Kerber to tie the game, before Kidwiler mover the hosts in front with a three-run shot over the left field fence for a 7-4 lead after six.
- Wiercinski gave up two singles and a walk which resulted in a sac fly for Kyler Newtown trimming the margin to 7-5 with men at first and second, but Rieger flew out to left to end the game.

- Wiercinski went the distance allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out seven.
- Kerber and Murray each had two hits combining for three runs scored and two RBIs.
- Kidwiler went 1-1 with two walks and a home run.
- McAdam, Moore, and Holcomb each added a hit.
- Landy took a no-decision going five frames giving up five hits and three runs with four walks.
- Cirilli earned the loss lasting 0.1 issuing two runs on three hits.
- Sides, Rieger, and Ginder went a combined 6-11 with three RBIs, a run scored, and a double.
- Alvernia () got on the board first against graduate student Joe Thompson as Shaffer and Cirilli singled before a double for Sides drove one in. The next batter was Matt Briner who plated the third runner with a sacrifice fly for the 3-0 lead.
- Stevenson () was set down in order by Nicholas Marotta in their half of the opening frame.
- After a clean second for Thompson, the Mustangs offense went to work in the bottom of the second. A single for DeLong and a walk to Kerber were followed by a sac bunt for Moore moving both men into scoring position for Holcomb.
- He plated DeLong with an infield single before Taylor made it 3-2 with a double down the left field line. The Mustangs knotted the game when Perkins laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to score the man from third.
- The game remained tied at 3-3 until the visiting half of the fourth when junior Zach Kaye took over on the hill for Thompson. He retired the first men he faced before issuing a free pass to pinch hitter Logan Levan.
- After Ginder worked a walk Shaffer cleared the bases with a three-run homer over the left field wall to make 6-3 guests. Cirilli then flew out to center to end the rally.
- The home side started to chip away at the score in the fifth when with two-out Murray legged out a bunt single and then came home on a base hit through the right side by McAdam cutting it to 6-4.
- Senior Mike Elia was brought in to start the sixth and gave up a walk along with a fielder's choice to runners at the corners for Ginder.
- Prior to him stepping into the box freshman Matt Reich was summoned from the bullpen and he allowed a single up the middle to score one to extend the lead back to three 7-4.
- Alvernia added to their advantage in the top of the final frame with a two-run homer from Rieger after a Briner walk.
- Stevenson got one back with their last chance on a pinch-hit home run for junior Mark Terrell to dead center, but it was not enough as Murray popped out to third for the 9-5 final.

- Thompson lasted three innings giving up three runs on six hits before departing.
- Kaye suffered the loss with two frames pitched allowing three runs on just two hits.
- Murray was 2-4 with a run scored.
- Six other Mustangs recorded a hit.
- Marotta went the distance for the visitors issuing eight hits leading to five runs and struck out two.
- Shaffer and Rieger combined for 3-7 with five RBIs, three runs scored and each hit a home run.
- Sides and Salesky chipped in with doubles.
- The win in game one stopped a four-game skid for Stevenson.
- Murray was 4-8 on the afternoon with three runs scored.
- The home run for Kidwiler in game one was his sixth of the year.
- For Terrell, it was home run one of the season.
- The Mustangs kept the same starting lineup for both games and each player totaled at least one hit.
- The Mustangs will return to action Monday, April 22 when they welcome the Catholic University Cardinals to Sugar Field for non-conference action beginning at 4pm.
- Stevenson will be looking to avenge an earlier 8-5 loss to the Cardinals in the nation's capital on April 10.
