Luterman and DeLong Lead Mustangs To Win Over Messiah

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson baseball team got three RBIs each from freshman Matt Luterman and senior Zachary DeLong to rally back from a 4-3 deficit to bring down the Falcons of Messiah College by a 9-4 final in game one of a weekend three-game MAC Commonwealth series on Friday afternoon at Sugar Field.

  • Messiah (9-18, 2-11 MAC Commonwealth) tried to strike early against junior starter Tyler Graham with a double for Jarod Bingaman and a walk to Ryan Hentschel put two on with two down for Sam Stewart.
  • He flew out to sophomore Thomas Holcomb in left to end the threat.
  • Stevenson (15-14, 7-6 MAC Commonwealth) would take the 1-0 lead on visiting pitcher Glenn Petraitis as a leadoff walk drawn by junior Kevin Murray Jr. followed by a Luterman single brought up senior Matthew Kerber.
  • Kerber would be safe on a fielder's choice which saw Luterman forced out going to second.
  • After he stole second moving two men into scoring position with one out for senior Jordan Moore who gave the hosts the lead with an RBI groundout.

  • Graham set down the Falcons hitters in order in the top half of the frame.
  • The Mustangs added to their lead with their attack in the second.  Back-to-back walks worked by Holcomb and junior Mark Terrell sent DeLong to the batter's box.
  • His frozen rope double down the left field line drove home both for the 3-0 lead, however, he got caught in a rundown between second and third and was ultimately tagged out.
  • A single for freshman Jonathan Brandt gave Murray a chance at moving the runner with one away, but he lined into a double play.

  • The away team made it to the scoreboard as a walk to Jimmy Kustra and single by Trent Culver led to an RBI single for Bingaman.
  • Josh Hayner cut the margin to 3-2 with a groundout to second scoring Culver from third.
  • The next man up was Hentschel who delivered a base hit to left plating the tying run.

  • Stevenson looked to reclaim the lead with consecutive walks to junior Alex Kidwiler and Holcomb putting two on with no outs, but Terrell bounced into a double play and DeLong grounded out to end the hope.

  • The Falcons took their first lead of the day when a hit batsman resulted in an RBI triple for Hayner two batters later for the 4-3 lead.
  • Hentschel walked to put men on the corners, unfortunately, for the guests, he was picked off of first to retire the side.
  • A two-out Luterman single gave the hosts an opportunity to answer with Kerber at the dish.
  • He popped up to second stranding a man on base.

  • Freshman reliver Sam Downs kept the Messiah bats quiet keeping the score at 4-3.
  • With two on and one gone Terrell was issued an intentional walk to load the bags.
  • That turned out to be a mistake as Chase Peiffer let a pitch to DeLong get too much of the plate and he deposited it off the left-center field fence leveling the score 4-4.
  • Carson Spangler replaced Peiffer on the mound and with Brandt at the dish a pitch skipped off the catcher's glove allowing Kidwiler to score from third for the lead.
  • After Brandt would end his at-bat being hit by a pitch two men later Luterman continued his strong day by lashing a two-bagger into the left-field corner plating a pair.
  • With Moore at the dish and the bases loaded again a wild pitch let Brandt in for the 8-4 edge.

  • Messiah put two men on in their half, but pinch hitter Conner Reyer bounced into a twin-killing to end the threat.
  • The Mustangs picked up an insurance run as Murray who came up with a one-out single came in on Luterman's second double of the game making it 9-4.

  • Junior Jake Vanko took over for Downs after he walked the first two batters in the frame and shut the door on the visitors getting a fly out of Hayner with the bases full to end the game.

  • W: Sam Downs (2-1), L: Chase Peiffer (1-1)
  • Graham got a no-decision lasting five innings giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and fanning four.
  • Downs and Vanko out of the pen went the final four issuing just two hits and no runs.
  • Luterman was 4-5 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs.
  • DeLong had the other multi-hit game for the home side with a two-bagger to go along with three RBIs.
  • Murray, Moore, Holcomb, and Brandt each had a hit as well.
  • Peiffer suffered the loss in relief of Petraitis going 2.1 frames allowing four runs on just three hits.
  • Bingaman and Hayner had two hits apiece for the Falcons.

  • The Mustangs wrap-up their three-game weekend series with Messiah tomorrow, Saturday, April 13 when they travel to Grantham, Pennsylvania for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
