Mustangs Extend Win Streak to Five, Blank Albright in Conference Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Jay Smith scored a goal in each half as the Stevenson University men's soccer team extended its win streak to five and its unbeaten streak to six with a 3-0 win over Albright in the MAC Commonwealth opener for both teams Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

  • Chris Gonzales had Stevenson's (8-2-2, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) first shot on frame in the 20th minute, but it was saved by Albright (5-7, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) keeper Billy Mullen.
  • In the 29th minute, Tariq Lee slid a ball to his left over to Smith, who fired top middle from 15 yards past Mullen for his sixth goal of the season.
  • Albright appeared to net the equalizer in the 35th minute, but the Lions were ruled offside.
  • A header by Jason Kahan just past the 42-minute mark was handled by Mullen.
  • The Mustangs held a 10-1 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

  • Stevenson goalie Matt Stellitano made a sliding stop on a header bid by Albright's Wynton Britton two minutes into the second half.
  • Moments later, Dylan Holy sent a header just outside the right post.
  • In the 51st minute, a header by Tariq Lee was corralled by Mullen.
  • Smith doubled the lead at 53:29 with a great individual effort as he slid a ball inside the near right post while falling down from eight yards out.

  • Stevenson outshot Albright 25-8 for the game.
  • The Mustangs had five of the game's seven corner kicks.
  • Stevenson's five-game win streak and six-game unbeaten streak are its longest since winning seven straight in the 2014 season.
  • The Mustangs ran their scoreless streak defensively to 504:26 as they posted their fifth straight shutout.
  • Stellitano made four saves in the first 73:17 before being spelled by Bobby Considine, who made one save to preserve the shutout.
  • Mullen had eight saves for Albright.

Jay Smith netted his second goal of the game on this strong individual effort.
