Mustangs Clinch Playoff Spot With 1-0 Victory Over Widener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer freshman Lezah Gannon scored the game's lone goal while junior Keegan Caffrey posted her sixth shutout of the season as the Mustangs cliched a playoff spot with a 1-0 MAC Commonwealth victory over Widener Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.

  • After nine minutes of back and forth action, the Pride (10-6-1, 1-4-1 MAC Commonwealth) had the first corner kick of the game but their shot was blocked at the top of the 18-yard box.
  • A few second later, Hannah Berard sent a ball towards the six-yard box that was headed by Alyssa Dionisio wide of the net as Caffrey came out to punch the ball away.
  • In the 14th minute, the Mustangs (8-7-1, 5-1-0 MAC Commonwealth) had their first shot of the game as senior Brianna Christie flicked a header on net off a long throw-in by classmate Alayna Roesener.
  • Off a free kick on the right side of the 18-yard box, Lexi Slusher put a rolling shot on net through traffic that was trapped by Caffrey.
  • Down the other end, senior Delayna Witouski blasted a shot on net to earn Stevenson its first corner kick of the match.
  • Just a few minutes after subbing into the game, freshman Lezah Gannon had a one-timer in close off a cross by Christie but Ashton Houbary got a hand on it to knock it away.
  • In the 43rd minute Dionisio got behind a pair of defender but Caffrey came off her line for a diving save to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.

  • Three minutes into the half, the Mustangs had a free kick from about 30 yards out that Christie fired wide right of the net.
  • Stevenson had three consecutive corner kicks starting in the 56th minute, putting two shot on net on the second attempt, both saved by Houbary.
  • In the 59th minute, senior Marissa Inglisa carried the ball down the left sideline before crossing it to the top of the box where Gannon fired a one-timer just underneath the crossbar.
  • In the final 30 seconds, Bella Abrams sent a shot on net from 25 yards out that was easily grabbed by Caffrey.

  • Stevenson outshot Widener, 13-7, including 8-1 in the second half, with the Pride's lone shot coming in the final minute.
  • Both team's finished with five corner kicks with the Mustangs recording four in the second half.
  • The back line of Witouski, seniors Rylie Patterson and Kelsey Krupski, and junior Allison Arters played all 90 minutes.
  • Patterson has played every minute on defense this season while Witouski played her sixth complete game.
  • Caffrey finished with four saves for her 10th career solo shutout.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, October 29 when the Mustangs travel to top-ranked Messiah for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
