Smith Scores in Mustangs Double Overtime Tie Versus Widener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer junior Jay Smith netted his team leading eight goal of the season but Widener scored an early second half goal as the Mustangs and Pride finished a 1-1 double overtime tie Friday evening at Mustang Stadium.

  • After dominating play early, the Mustangs (10-4-3, 3-2-1 MAC Commonwealth) had the first shot of the game as freshman Chris Gonzales headed a shot on target after senior DR Medtart floated in a free kick.
  • A few minutes later, Medtart crossed in a pass for junior Tariq Lee who headed it on frame but it was grabbed by John Warwick.
  • Stevenson earned the game's first corner kick but the cross in by sophomore Sean McDonald was cleared out of the box by the Pride.
  • Widener (9-6-1, 2-3-1 MAC Commonwealth) had its first corner kick in the 23rd minute but it was punched away by sophomore Matt Stellitano.
  • Down the other end, Medtart beat Warwick to the ball that was crossed in by McDonald, but Medtart headed the ball over the crossbar.
  • In the 42nd minute, sophomore Brian Ventura blocked a clear attempt by the Pride, allowing Smith to run onto the ball and beat Warwick to the low left corner to give the hosts a late first half lead.

  • The Pride had a corner kick in the 48th minute that lead to a goal on the third consecutive shot by Widener. Stellitano made an initial two saves but could not clear the ball as Nick Brison tied the game at the 48:13 mark.
  • Sophomore Diego Guerrero played a ball from midfield for Lee but Lee's shot was right into the chest of Warwick.
  • In the 59th minute, Smith had a quick turnaround shot after a ball played by sophomore Alex Morales, but the shot went wide left.
  • Morales played a short corner kick to the top of the box that was lobbed in by Medtart to Gonzales whose header was collected by Warwick.
  • The Mustangs had two corner kicks in the final 30 seconds, with Guerrero heading a shot high on the final attempt.

  • The Pride had the first corner kick of overtime but the Stellitano batted the ball down and away on the cross in.
  • In the second overtime, both goalies came up with a save in the first five minutes.
  • The Mustangs had a corner kick in the 109th minute that eventually found the feet of Holy on the back post but he sent the shot high.
  • Stevenson had four shots in the second overtime.

  • Stevenson outshot Widener, 22-6, including 6-1 in the two overtime periods.
  • The Mustangs also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Lee had a game-high five shots.
  • Stellitano finished with four saves.


  • Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, October 30 when the Mustangs travel to 13th-ranked Messiah for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
