Mustangs Blank Delaware Valley for Second Straight Shutout

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Freshman Jason Kahan scored his first collegiate goal as the Stevenson University men's soccer team posted its second straight shutout, besting Delaware Valley 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

  • The Mustangs (4-3) had two chances in the fourth minute.  An initial shot by James Rosa was saved, then Jay Smith collected the rebound and his shot from the top of the 18 sailed high.
  • Stevenson took a 1-0 lead at 8:33 when Jevan Leyh played a long free kick into the box from midfield.  Kahan collected it off a bounce and beat DelVal keeper Josh Jarrett to the far right post for his first collegiate goal.
  • Rosa and Smith put headers on frame in the 14th and 18th minutes, but both were turned aside by Jarrett.
  • Tariq Lee was all alone and pushed a shot just wide of the far left post in the 35th minute.
  • Stevenson outshot Delaware Valley (3-4) 21-1 in the first half, including 7-0 on target, and had six corner kicks to none for the Aggies.

  • Stevenson kept the pressure on with six shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
  • In the 60th minute, Drew Meyers nearly connected with Lee for a header in the box, but the right-to-left cross was just over Lee's head.
  • Delaware Valley had its first shot of the second half with just over 18 minutes to go.
  • After a series of short passes, CJ Beteta sent a shot just over the crossbar in the 76th minute.
  • The Aggies had their first corner kick just shy of the 80-minute mark, but a shot attempt from the top right corner sailed high.
  • Smith added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute.  Nick Ellis played a long ball from midfield down to Smith, who got around a DelVal defender and slipped the ball between Jarrett and the near left post for his fourth goal of the season.

  • Stevenson outshot DelVal 35-3 and had all 10 of the game's shots on frame.  The 35 shots were a season high.
  • The Mustangs generated a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Stevenson has its best record through seven games since 2014, when the Mustangs started 6-1.
  • Matt Stellitano was not forced to make a save en route to his second shutout of the season.  Aggie counterpart Jarrett made nine saves, while the guests also recorded one team save.
  • The Mustangs have recorded shutouts in three of their last four games and in four games this season.  The four clean sheets marks Stevenson's most since 2010.
  • Wednesday's meeting between Stevenson and Delaware Valley was just the second all-time, as the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in 2003.

Jason Kahan scores his first collegiate goal and the game-winner in the ninth minute.

  • Stevenson wraps up its seven-game home stand Saturday when it hosts Wilkes in a 4:00 non-conference contest at Mustang Stadium.
