Guerrero Nets First Career Goal in Season Opening Loss at Washington (Md.)

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer freshman Diego Guerrero netted his first career goal to tie the game early in the second half but Washington (Md.) answered with the game-winner to post a 2-1 non-conference victory in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

  • The Mustangs had an early look on goal as junior DR Medtart played a ball into the box but the header by sophomore Jay Smith sailed wide.
  • Down the other end, the Shoremen (1-0) got on the board in the 5th minute as Liam Mansfield scored on an assist from Kevin Sawyer following a throw in.
  • With 13:57 remaining in the half, Medtart had a free kick from the corner of the 18-yard box. He played it low and Guerrero was able to get a shot off but it was blocked.
  • Stevenson held a, 7-6, advantage in shots but put only two on frame.
  • Both goalies recorded a pair of saves.

  • The Mustangs (0-1) netted the equalizer in the 53rd minute as Guerrero scored his first career goal. After a long throw by sophomore Evan Joseph bounced in front, the ball bounced to the feet of Guerrero who fired a shot to the left corner of the net.
  • A few minutes later, Stellitano came up with his fourth save of the game as he tipped a header over the bar.
  • Ten minutes after Stevenson tied the game at 1-1, Washington (Md.) reclaimed the lead as Aidan Chadam headed in a corner kick from Kyle Kirwan.
  • Freshman Tariq Lee recorded a shot on net in the 77th minute, the last from the Mustangs.
  • The Mustangs recorded six corner kicks in the half.

  • Stevenson outshot the Shoremen, 17-12, including 10-6 in the second half.
  • Freshman Matt Stellitano made his first career start in net, totaling four saves.
  • Sophomore Dylan Holy made his 18th consecutive start on defense.
  • Ten Mustangs made their career debut, including Joseph and Drew Meyers who both started on defense.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, September 1 when the Mustangs host Penn College in the home opener beginning at 3:00 p.m.
