Box Score 2 STEVENSON, Md. – The Stevenson baseball team celebrated their ten seniors in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon at Sugar Field using a walk-off RBI single from sophomore Alex Kidwiler to take game two of the MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against Arcadia University by a score of 3-2. In the first game of the day, the Green and White suffered a hard-fought 5-3 defeat
Stevenson (17-20, 7-13 MAC Commonwealth) was led in game one by a pair of two-hit games from seniors John D'Aquanno and Billy Small. D'Aquanno had a pair of singles, while Small added a home run and two RBIs. Senior Michael Rhodes and sophomore Mark Terrell each picked up a hit. Kidwiler recorded an RBI sacrifice fly as well.
Arcadia got on the board in the opening inning against Mustangs senior starter Michael Remeikis. Bryan Gillen began things by reaching on an error by Kidwiler at third. Luke Hohenstein then singled to left putting two on with no outs. Sean Carew went down watching strike three for the first out, however, on that pitch both runners moved up 90-feet. Nick Cardace picked up a sacrifice fly to right scoring Gillen for the early lead. Phil Pierfy grounded back to Remeikis to end the threat. In the bottom half of the frame, the Green and White were set down one-two-three by Knights starter Jake Lloyd keeping it at 1-0 after one. Both teams would find the scoreboard in frame number two. With two away Nick Ponente singled to center. The next man was Matt Ernst and he came up with a base knock to left. On the throw into third attempting to retire Ponente the batter was able to advance to second putting two men in scoring position with two gone for the top of the order in Gillen. He added to the visitor's advantage with a two-run single to right-center. Hohenstein flew out to left to retire the side. Stevenson chipped away at the deficit in the home half of the inning. Small led off with an infield single and Terrell would be hit by the Lloyd offering putting two on with no one out. Senior Jake Dimon advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt setting up a great RBI chance for Kidwiler. He delivered with a sac fly to center allowing Small to come in. After Rhodes singled to put men on the corners senior Michael Kelly fanned on the third strike to halt the rally. In the home part of the third, the Green and White would draw even thanks to some more two-out thunder. D'Aquanno began the threat reaching on an infield single to shortstop. That sent Small to the plate and on senior day he delivered blasting his seventh homer of the season and knotting the score at 3-3. That was the end of the afternoon for Lloyd as he was replaced by Mike Boulanger. He gave up a single to Terrell and a walk to Dimon but got Kidwiler to fly out to end the inning.
The game remained deadlocked until the fifth when Arcadia would retake the lead. After Carew popped out to first Cardace singled to center. The following hitter was Pierfy who ripped a two-bagger to deep center moving the runner up to third still with just one out. Josh Fulmer plated one with a sacrifice fly to center. Anthony Zupito was then brought in to pinch-hit for Tyler Wisnewski. He made the manager's decision pay off with an RBI single to left scoring Pierfy. Ponente flew out to center to end the frame. In the last of the inning, D'Aquanno picked up a one-out base hit but got no further as Small and Terrell were then put away to keep the score 5-3. Stevenson had one more base runner the rest of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Kidwiler reached on an error. In the seventh, the Mustangs did not record a base runner and the game ended on a D'Aquanno groundout.
Stevenson starter Remeikis (3-3) took the loss going five giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits while fanning two. Senior Kenny Armiger lasted 1.1 allowing two hits and striking out one. Junior Mike Elia went 0.2 of a frame not surrendering a hit.
In the second game of the day, Stevenson (18-20, 8-13 MAC Commonwealth) was paced by the game-hero Kidwiler who went 2-4 with the game-winning RBI. Junior Jordan Moore, freshman Nate Perkins, and Small each added a hit with Small picking up the other Mustangs RBI.
The Knights got on the board first against junior James Wiercinski as Gillen led off the game with a walk and went to second on a passed ball. Hohenstein followed behind him with a knock to center putting men on the corners with no one out. Carew and Cardace were put away setting up two on with two gone for Pierfy. He ripped a single through the left side allowing both runners to come home. Fulmer struck out swinging limiting the damage to just 2-0. Stevenson came galloping back in their half of the frame touching up Arcadia starter Robert Lichtenberger for a solo run. With one out Murray was issued a free pass and stole second before D'Aquanno was hit by a pitch. Small then stepped into the batter's box and reached on a fielder's choice on the pitch Murray was racing for third and on the throw to first he was able to scamper all the way home. Kidwidler singled and junior Jonathan Lugo was the second man to get plunked by a pitch in the frame to load the bases with two out. Moore fanned on strike three making it 2-1 after one.
In the second the Green and White had runners at second and third with two down, but D'Aquanno popped out to end the threat. Both sides went in order in the third and fourth keeping the score at 2-1. Wiercinski got the first two men out in the away half of inning five, but Hohenstein broke up the streak of nine in a row retired by the Mustangs pitcher with a double deep down the left-field line. The next batter was Carew who singled to left. Hohenstein attempting to extend the advantage came racing around third heading for home but a strong throw from Perkins in left to Moore behind the dish let the tag be applied in time to leave the margin at 2-1. Kerber began the last of the fifth by being hit by the pitch. Then with Murray at-bat, he took second on a wild pitch and went to third on a failed pickoff throw by the Lichtenberger on the mound. Murray eventually drew a walk to signal the end of the day for Lichtenberger as he was replaced by Jeremy Sabathne. He got D'Aquanno on strikes for the first out. Small was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Kidwiler. During his plate appearance, Sabathne uncorked a wild pitch allowing everyone to move up a bag including letting Kerber score to tie things up 2-2. That would be the end of the rally though as Kidwiler and Lugo were retired to end the frame.
The score remained tied into the seventh inning when Wiercinski got Zupito on strikes and pinch-hitter Trevor Mattson to line out for a quick two outs. Ernst drew a walk before Gillen flew out to right to retire the side. Murray began the home half with a line out to right for the first out. D'Aquanno was hit by a pitch and Small doubled to deep left putting two in scoring position for Kidwiler. Before his at-bat started Arcadia manager Bryan Torresani brought right fielder Zak Thomas into the infield to put five Knights in there. It was no issue for Kidwiler though as he roped a single out to the vacated right field to score D'Aquanno to earn the walk-off win 3-2.
Stevenson starter Wiercinski (5-4) went the distance giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out nine.
The Mustangs return to action on Tuesday, May, 1 when they wrap-up the 2018 regular season with a non-conference contest at Marymount in Arlington, Virginia. First pitch against the Saints is set for 1pm.
