MIAMI, Fla. – The Stevenson University women's beach volleyball team opened its Spring Break trip with two victories, downing St. Thomas (Fla.) 5-0 and Florida National 4-1 Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs improved to 4-2.
Against St. Thomas, all five matches were won in straight sets. Senior Annika Schwartz and sophomore Trang Christensen were 21-19, 21-11 winners at No. 1, while senior Lauren Weaver and sophomore Katie Leftridge posted a 21-11, 21-12 win at No. 2. Sophomore Darian Hileman and freshman Jessi Freeman prevailed 21-6, 21-10 at No. 3, while sophomores Julie Nightwine and Victoria Prokic took the first set 21-15 before pulling out a 22-20 win at No. 4. Senior Katie McGuire and freshman Sarah Riggin won 21-10, 21-18 at No. 5.
In an exhibition match, sophomore Emily Castro and freshman Lizi Cudal won the first set 21-18 before dropping the second set.
Against Florida National, Schwartz and Christensen won 21-19, 21-12 at No. 1, while Weaver and Leftridge won 21-11, 21-14 at No. 2. Hileman and Freeman held their opponents to 12 total points in a 21-8, 21-4 win at No. 3, while Prokic and Nightwine were 21-13, 21-8 victors at No. 4. McGuire and Riggin forced a third set with a 21-15 win after dropping the first set 21-12, but fell 15-12 in the third. Castro and Cudal won in exhibition play by identical 21-11 scores.
Stevenson returns to action Tuesday at the University of Tampa, taking on Eckerd at 1 pm before a match with the host Spartans at 2 pm.
