Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's soccer team erased a second half deficit to force overtime versus top-ranked and defending National Champion, Messiah, but the Falcons scored in the 97th minute to escape with a 2-1 MAC Commonwealth victory Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.
- Neither team recorded a shot on net in the opening half, with Messiah outshooting the hosts, 7-3.
- The first two shots by the Falcons (9-0-2, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) were blocked by Stevenson while four of their next five were taken outside of the 18-yard box.
- Sophomore Jay Smith had the only shot by the Mustangs (7-4, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) taken inside the box, getting a head on a free kick but it sailed high.
- Stevenson's third and final shot of the half was taken close to midfield by sophomore CJ Beteta as time expired.
- Early in the period, Lucas Kokolios got past the Mustangs defense and went to fire a shot from the top of the box but it was blocked by sophomore Jevan Leyh.
- In the 51st minute, Messiah had a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box but Nick West's shot was blocked by the defensive wall.
- The first shot on goal of the game came in the 54th minute by the Falcons as David Alejos took a shot from 25 yards out that was easily saved by freshman Matt Stellitano.
- Messiah had a free kick from 23 yards out in the 59th minute but the service was headed away by sophomore Drew Meyers.
- Kokolios had another look on goal in the 63rd minute but his shot from the top of the box went just wide of the right post.
- In the 73rd minute, sophomore Dylan Holy came up with a block as Luke Brautigam fired a shot in close.
- Alejos had the best scoring opportunity of the night just a minute later as his shot barely missed over top of the crossbar.
- West broke the scoring in the 77th minute as he headed in his nation leading 18th goal off a corner kick from Kokolios on the near post.
- In the 84th minute, Lee carried down the left side and fired a shot on net that was saved by Connor Bell before Rosa fired the rebound attempt that bounced off a Falcon defender and in.
- In the opening minute, the Mustangs had a free kick from the right side of the box but the service by junior DR Medtart was headed away.
- In the 97th minute, West fired a shot from the right side that was saved by Stellitano and knocked towards the top of the box but Luke Groothoff collected the rebound and beat a Mustang defender and Stellitano to the back of the net.
- Messiah outshot Stevenson, 23-6, with only four shots on net. The Falcons also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
- The Falcons improved to 6-0-1 all-time versus the Mustangs. It is the first goal Stevenosn has scored since the first meeting in 2012.
- Messiah has netted 24 of its 34 goals in the second half this season while it is just the seventh second half goal allowed by the Mustangs.
- Stellitano finished with a pair of saves while Bell recorded one.
- Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, October 6 when the Mustangs travel to 17th-ranked Lycoming for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
- The Mustangs are back home on Tuesday, October 9 versus Hood in a MAC Commonwealth tilt beginning at 7:00 p.m.
