Box Score STEVENSON, Md. – The Stevenson University baseball team extended its win streak to five games with a 5-4 non-conference victory over Catholic University Wednesday afternoon at Sugar Field.
For Stevenson (11-13), its five-game win streak is its longest since winning nine straight from February 24-March 9, 2013. The Cardinals (18-6) are receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll.
Stevenson led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh when it scored three times to build a 5-1 lead. Junior Jake Hall was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and scored on a looping single to right by sophomore Matthew Kerber. Kerber stole second and scored when senior Kevin Kopas belted a two-run home run to left to make it 5-1.
Catholic scored three times in the top half of the eighth to again pull within a run. Two of its runs came via a bases-loaded walk followed by a hit batter, but senior reliever Matt Phillips was able to wiggle out of the jam and leave the bases loaded with a strikeout of pinch hitter Anthony Ferlise.
Stevenson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as with the bases loaded and no outs, Kopas grounded to third and CUA elected to erase the runner at second. Hall, who led off the game with a single, scored. The Mustangs had runners at second and third with one out, but a strikeout and a flyout kept it a one-run game.
In the third, Hall worked a leadoff walk, and after stealing second, scored on a single to the gap by Kerber. Catholic halved the lead in the top of the sixth as Cid Porter doubles and scored on a single by Ryan Tracy.
Stevenson outhit Catholic 9-6, with Kerber going 3-4 with a pair of runs driven in. Junior Michael Remeikis moved to 2-0 on the mound, allowing two hits and one run in six innings while striking out three and walking one. Freshman Erik Arenberg tossed a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to post the save.
Starter Joseph Prego took the loss for the Cardinals, surrendering seven hits and two runs over three-plus innings of work.
Stevenson returns to action Friday afternoon when it opens a three-game MAC Commonwealth series with Hood on the road. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
