Baseball Completes Season Sweep of Catholic

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman catcher Alex Kidwiler knocked in six runs as the Stevenson University baseball team completed a two-game season sweep of Catholic University with an 11-10 win Wednesday at Talbot Field.

Eight of nine Stevenson (15-18) starters recorded at least one hit, with freshman Mark Terrell going 4-5 at the plate.  Kidwiler and junior John D'Aquanno each had three hits, while junior Billy Small added two.

The Mustangs scored five times in the top of the second to build an early 5-0 lead.  Kidwiler opened the scoring with a two-run double to the gap in right center, while sophomore Matthew Kerber and senior Kevin Kopas each had RBI singles.  Catholic (22-9) got back two runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-2.

Terrell and sophomore Connor Wasilnak opened the third with back-to-back singles and after the pair moved into scoring position on a balk, Kidwiler belted a three-run home run to left to make it 8-2.  Jake Hall reached on a one-out double and eventually scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 9-2.

The Cardinals grabbed a run in the bottom of the third, but Kidwiler struck again in the fourth, with his single through the left side scoring Kopas, who worked a leadoff walk.  CUA closed the gap with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 10-8, but another Mustang run in the fifth came when Terrell singled to center to bring in D'Aquanno.

Catholic plated single runs in the fifth and seventh to pull within 11-10, but never seriously threatened over the final two innings.

Stevenson starter Jonathan Lugo went the first four innings and surrendered five earned runs before giving way to Jake Vanko, who allowed four hits and two runs in three innings.  Sophomore James Wiercinski allowed one hit over the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.  Jack Ropelewski, the first of seven Cardinal pitchers on the day, took the loss.

Stevenson returns to action Friday when it opens a critical three-game MAC Commonwealth series with No. 12 Alvernia on the road.  First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
