Box Score READING, Pa. – Sophomore James Wiercinski tossed eight shutout innings as Stevenson University blanked Albright College 8-0 in MAC Commonwealth baseball Saturday afternoon at Kelchner Field.
Wiercinski picked up his second victory of the season by allowing just four hits and striking out five and walking one. The Lions (6-10, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth) left just one runner on base as Stevenson turned three double plays on the day.
Stevenson (8-13, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, then scored two more runs in the third, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth.
In the first, junior Jake Hall and sophomore Matthew Kerber led off with back-to-back singles. After the pair moved over on a sac bunt by junior John D'Aquanno, a double to the gap in right center by senior Kevin Kopas made it 2-0.
In the third, Kerber led off with a single and stole second, followed by D'Aquanno reaching on an error. After both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, a Kopas groundout brought in Kerber, while a sac fly by junior Billy Small plated D'Aquanno.
Small reached on a one out single in the sixth and eventually scored on a single to left by sophomore Connor Wasilnak. In the seventh, freshman Brady Kessler was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after moving to second on a pickoff error and third on a groundout, scored on a wild pitch.
A Kerber sac fly in the ninth brought in Kessler, while D'Aquanno singled through the left side to score Hall, who reached on a one out single.
Stevenson outhit Albright 10-4 and did not commit an error. Hall, Kerber and Wasilnak each finished with two hits. Connor Travis took the loss for Albright, surrendering seven hits and five runs in six innings. Austin Reitz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the win for Stevenson.
The same two teams close out their season series Sunday with a 1:00 pm doubleheader at Stevenson's Sugar Field.
