Mustangs Capitalize on Early McDaniel Miscues in 6-3 Win

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Stevenson University took advantage of four McDaniel College errors in the first two innings to score five times in an eventual 6-3 non-conference baseball victory at Preston Field Thursday afternoon.   The win snapped a seven-game slide for the Mustangs.

Stevenson (7-13) had the first two runners of the game reach on errors.  Junior Jake Hall reached on an error by McDaniel's shortstop, while sophomore Matthew Kerber reached on an error at third base.  With two outs and the bases loaded, junior Michael Rhodes singled through the left side to score Hall and Kerber and make it 2-0.

After McDaniel (8-9) grabbed a run in the bottom of the first, the Mustangs plated three more in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead.  Freshman Brady Kessler singled to lead off the inning, then with two outs, Kerber singled to give Stevenson runners at the corners.  Kessler stole home on a double steal to make it 3-1, then a single by junior John D'Aquanno again gave the Mustangs runners at the corners.  Two more errors on a play on which D'Aquanno stole second allowed both runners to score.

Stevenson's other run came in the fifth when a wild pitch bounced over the backstop, allowing senior Kevin Kopas to score from third after starting the inning off with a single.

The Green Terror scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh and had a runner on second with two outs when reliever CJ Kilpatrick struck out Tim Griest to avoid further damage.  McDaniel had two in scoring position and the tying run at the plate in the eighth, but a popup allowed Kilpatrick to get out of the inning unscathed.

Junior Michael Remeikis, making his second start of the season, picked up his first victory, scattering 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work and allowing three runs while striking out five and not walking a batter.  Kilpatrick did not allow a hit in his 1.2 innings of relief, while senior Matt Phillips allowed one hit and recorded a strikeout to record his second save of the season by working the ninth.

Kerber had a 3-5 day at the plate as the Mustangs were outhit 12-10. Bran Thaxton took the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) in six innings while striking out seven and walking four.. Both teams finished the afternoon with four errors.

Stevenson returns to MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday when it travels to Albright for a noon doubleheader.
