No. 3 SUNY Cortland Walks Off With 5-4 Win

Box Score

FERRUM, Va. – Third-ranked SUNY Cortland broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning with a walkoff single as the Red Dragons defeated Stevenson 5-4 in non-conference baseball Monday afternoon at Panther Field.

Stevenson (5-6) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, then tacked on another run in the sixth to make it 4-1.  SUNY Cortland (10-2) scored three times in the seventh before coming up with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

In the second, the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead when senior Kevin Kopas scored on a groundout by junior Jake Dimon.  The Red Dragons tied the game with a two-out run in the bottom of the second to tie the game, before Stevenson grabbed two runs in the third.  Dimon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Kopas, who had reached on a one out single, while the third Mustang run scored when junior Billy Small scored as senior Kyle Weidemeyer reached on an error.

In the sixth, Cortland retired the first two batters before junior Jake Hall reached on an error, went to second on a John D'Aquanno walk, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.  The Red Dragons used two hits, a walk, a hit batter and a sac fly to score three times in the seventh to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Billy Kozak was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sac bunt.  After the next batter, Steven Figueroa, was intentionally walked, pinch hitter Matthew Personius fouled out to make it two outs.  Patrick Schetter then delivered a single to plate Kozak for Cortland's fifth straight win.

Small extended his hit streak to nine games, while Kopas extended his to eight.  D'Aquanno led the Mustangs with two hits as they were outhit 7-6.  Freshman Zach Kaye went the first six innings and allowed four hits and one run while striking out nine.  After junior Kenny Armiger allowed three runs without retiring a batter in the seventh, senior Matt Phillips went the final 2.2 innings and allowed one hit, Schetter's single, to take the loss.

With Tuesday's game at Bridgewater (Va.) postponed, Stevenson is currently scheduled to open MAC Commonwealth play Friday at Widener.
