REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Natalie Rosendahl scored the game-tying goal on a third period power play goal as the Mustangs finished in a 2-2 non-conference tie versus Buffalo State Saturday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
The Mustangs (3-7-2) have never lost an overtime game in program history, posting a 5-0-6 record, including 3-0-6 on home ice. It is also the first time Stevenson has posted more than one tie in a single season after posting one tie in all five previous seasons.
After a back and forth opening period, the Bengals (7-6-1) struck first as Rachel Lenard scored on a rush after the Mustangs held the puck in their offensive zone and kept Buffalo State from making a change. But the hosts responded with 22 seconds remaining before intermission as junior Cierra Siemasko scored her third power play goal of the season. Senior Chelsea Blackburn threw the puck towards the net before classmate Monica Pozuc slid it to Siemasko.
Siemasko has six points in her four game point streak while Blackburn set a new career-high with a six game point streak.
The Bengals reclaimed their lead with a power play goal in the second period, the first power play goal allowed in 16 penalty kill opportunities for the Mustangs. Stevenson finished with a season-high five penalties.
Stevenson scored its second power play goal just 12 seconds into the player advantage as Rosendahl shot the puck from the point past the glove of Anna Quattro. Blackburn and Siemasko were credited with the assists. It is the seventh multi-assist game for Blackburn in her career while Siemasko posted her second straight multi-point game.
The Mustangs outshot the Bengals, 33-32, with both teams totaling two shots in the overtime period. The hosts also won 38 of the 61 face-offs, with Blackburn winning 22 of her 29 attempts.
Sophomore Annie Smyth-Hammond finished with 30 saves while the Mustangs finished with 19 blocked shots, including a block by senior Savannah Sommers at the end of regulation to help force overtime. Senior Sarah Antonelli had a game-high three blocked shots.
Stevenson is back in action after the New Year when the Mustangs host a single non-conference game versus Neumann beginning at 5:30 p.m.
