REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Chelsea Blackburn became the first player in program history to record 100 career points but the Mustangs could not recover from a three-goal deficit in a 6-3 non-conference loss versus Buffalo State Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
It is just the fifth loss in 59 games when the Mustangs (3-7-1) score at least three goals while the team falls to 8-51-1 when allowing three or more. It was also just the third meeting between the two teams and firsts since Stevenson's inaugural games in 2012. Buffalo State leads the series, 2-1.
On the hosts first shot of the game, senior Kellen Wittman sent a wrister over the glove side Bri Gawronski to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. It is the seventh point in the last three games for Wittman who has four goals and three assists. Junior Allie Sabatini and sophomore Allyson Barlow picked up the assists. Sabatini extended her point streak to four games while Barlow extends her to three.
The Bengals (7-6-0) answered with three straight goals in the opening period, including the last coming shorthanded Emma Ruggiero after Caitie Horvatits blocked a shot off a shot from the point. It is the second shorthanded goal the Mustangs have allowed this season.
After Buffalo State extended its lead to three just 2:29 into the second period, the Mustangs answered with back-to-back power play goals with the first coming from Blackburn. The goal was the 70th in her career after she tapped in a rebound off a shot from senior Natalie Rosendahl. It was also the 17th career power play goal for Blackburn.
Just 3:19 later, junior Cierra Siemasko extended her point streak to three games with her second power play goal of the season on an assist from Blackburn to get the hosts within one. In 34 career home games, Blackburn has recorded 49 points on 37 goals and 12 assists.
The Bengals answered with 3:15 remaining in the second period to push their lead back to two before adding a third period goal.
The Mustangs were outshot, 40-24, including 10-2 in the third period. Stevenson falls to 17-43-4 under head coach Tracy Johnson when being held to under 30 shots.
For the third straight game, the Mustangs scored on the power play, finishing 2-for-7. The team is 9-for-21 over the last three games. Defensively, the penalty kill was perfect for the fifth consecutive game, killing off all four shorthanded opportunities
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, December 9 when the Mustangs host the second of a two-game series versus Buffalo State. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
