Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer freshman Alayna Roesener scored her first career goal in the 84th minute to lift the Mustangs over former CAC rival Salisbury, 2-1, Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak in the series for the Mustangs (3-3) and it is the sixth consecutive one-goal game between the two teams. It is also the fourth one-goal game for Stevenson this season.
The hosts tried to take advantage of the long throw capability of Roesener early on but a flicked header by junior Kailee Ziegler was knocked over the crossbar by goalkeeper Hope Knussman for a corner kick.
After the corner kick, Carli Dixon came up with her second save off the goal line in less than a four minute span to keep the game scoreless.
In the 22nd minute, junior Tiffany McKee came out near the top of the box to gather a bouncing ball but could not get it covered as Jayne Pinsky was able to gather the ball freely for the Sea Gulls (1-2-3). But Roesener was there to deflect the shot on an empty net away with her hip.
Dixon came up big once again in the opening half after Knussman knocked down the first Stevenson shot before Dixon cleared the ball off the line after a rebound attempt by freshman Kelsey Krupski.
Roesener and Ziegler tried to connect again on the long throw late in the opening half, but the flicked header was right to the hands of Knussman.
The Mustangs finally broke through in the 58th minute as a long free kick from junior Shannon Ogrysko found the feet of Siejack who was able to spin away from her defender and beat Knussman to the lower right corner.
The hosts held the lead for just 6:37, Jenny Gavigan hit a long cross to the back post as Lydia Narum ran onto the ball unmarked and headed the ball out of the air at the six-yard box back across to the far left corner.
On the fourth corner kick of the game for Stevenson, junior Brittney Celano played it near the six-yard box and Roesener was able to get her head on it as Knussman came out to play the ball. The ball snuck by a Sea Gull defender on the back post before hitting off the post and in.
In the 88th minute, McKee came way off her line to play a ball but her sliding save came outside the box and she was issued a yellow card for using her hands out of the 18-yard box. But the Salisbury free kick went wide of the net.
The Mustangs outshot the Sea Gulls, 15-9, including 10-4 in the opening half while also holding a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Stevenson continues its six-game home stand on Saturday, September 24 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Haverford beginning at 7:30 p.m.
