Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - Stevenson field hockey sophomore Sara McVey gave the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead but the Mustangs could not hang on as Lynchburg came from behind for a 2-1 victory in the season opener for both teams Friday evening at Shellenberger Field.
The Mustangs (0-1) held on with Lynchburg, who is receiving votes in the NFHCA Preseason Poll, in the opening half as both teams recorded five shots. But the Hornets (1-0) outshot Stevenson, 16-7 the rest of the way, including 3-0 in overtime.
McVey scored an unassisted tally just over 24 minutes into the contest to put the visitors ahead. It is the 16th career goal for McVey who finished second on the team last season with 15 in her rookie year.
Kayla Copeland tied the game for the hosts in the 50th minute as she knocked in a deflected cross.
Both teams had chances late in regulation as McVey could not get around goalkeeper Beka Hess before the Hornets failed to convert on a two-on-one opportunity.
In overtime, freshman Kelsey Eure made her 10th save of the game two minutes into the period before Copeland nearly scored her second of the game, knocking a lifted pass just wide of the net.
Lacey Elliot ended it 3:15 into the extra period as she broke down the sideline and beat two Mustang defenders before sliding the ball past Eure on the near post.
The Hornets held a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, September 7 when the Mustangs host No. 7 Salisbury in their home opener. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
