Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey freshman Ashli Glatfelter scored her first career goal while senior Holli Eppley scored her third career game-winning goal as the Mustangs defeated Shenandoah, 2-1, in a non-conference contest Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.
It was the second one-goal win for the Mustangs (2-3) who extended their series lead to 4-2 over Shenandoah. With the win, Stevenson also improved its home record to 15-6 since the start of the 2014 season.
The Hornets (2-4) started the game with three consecutive penalty corners but came away with nothing as freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Eure knocked both shot attempts away from the visitors.
Down the other end, Shenandoah goalkeeper Kayla Alderman came up with a save on her first action of the game as she kicked away a shot by senior Rosemarie Neiva on a feed from sophomore Sara McVey.
On the second penalty corner of the contest for Stevenson, sophomore Marissa Hoffman had the stick stop at the top of the circle before firing the ball to the back post to McVey. McVey got a stick to the ball but sent it wide.
The Mustangs drew another penalty corner four minutes later but the tip by junior Kali Martin was saved on the line by Kiera Lane.
Following a defensive save by senior Blair Bitner, the Hornets got on the board as Taylor Little put away the rebound attempt on the back post. But just 1:55 later, the hosts knotted the game at 1-1 as Glatfelter converted on a penalty stroke.
A yellow card on the Mustangs near the midway point of the second half did not slow down the hosts as Stevenson fired back-to-back shots off of a penalty corner but both were saved by Alderman.
With just over eight minute left remaining in regulation, Hoffman had another stick stop off a corner by sophomore Ashley Meyer before sliding it over to Eppley who picked up her first goal of the year and 10th of her career.
The Mustangs outshot the Hornets, 13-8 and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. Eure finished with four saves while Alderman totaled three.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, September 20 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Rowan beginning at 7:00 p.m.
