Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For just the second time this season, the Stevenson men's soccer team was held scoreless as the Mustangs fell to Bridgewater (Va.), 1-0, in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The win was the second consecutive for Bridgewater (Va.) in the series after the Mustangs (0-6-1) won the first three. It was also the third one-goal loss for Stevenson, including two in its last three games.
A near giveaway at the edge of the 18-yard box gave the Eagles (3-1-2) their first look at goal but a weak shot went right into the chest of senior goalkeeper Michael Tringali. Tringali was forced to make another save early in the contest as he just got his hands on a strike to the far post.
The visitors had another scoring opportunity in the 27th minute as Renato Grgic collected the ball off a free kick right outside the six-yard box but Tringali was in position for the save.
Down the other end, sophomore Colin Horne ran onto a through ball played from midfield but sent the shot just wide of the far post.
Stevenson had its best scoring chance in the opening half with just under seven minutes to play as freshman James Vess ran onto a misplayed ball by the Bridgewater (Va.) defender, but Vess shot the ball right at goalkeeper Mark Davis who came off his line.
Jonathan Min had a look at a wide open net for the Eagles as a cross from Connor Henderson found Min on the back post but his one-touch went wide.
Just two minutes into the second half, Leo Alcantara gave the visitors a 1-0 lead as he got through Stevenson defenders and ripped a shot 25 yards out that sailed just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hand of Tringali.
It was the fifth goal the Mustangs have given up in the first five minutes of the second half this season.
In the 63rd minute, sophomore Kevin Benitez carried the ball to the end line before crossing it to classmate Iliyas Mirza who got a head to it but Davis was able to get across the line and tip it over the net to sustain the Eagles one-goal lead.
The Mustangs last attempt came in the 88th minute as a header by Horne to the near post off a cross was knocked away once again by Davis for his seventh save. Tringali also finished the game with seven saves.
Bridgewater (Va.) held a 16-11 edge in shots, including 11-3 in the second half while the hosts had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Stevenson continues its four-game home stand on Wednesday, September 21 when the Mustangs host Johns Hopkins in a non-conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
