Wittman Scores Mustangs Lone Goal as Stevenson Falls to Catholic, 2-1

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer junior Kellen Wittman scored her first goal of the season but two first half goals were enough for visiting Catholic as the Cardinals came away with a 2-1 victory over the Mustangs Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

With the second half goal, the Mustangs (1-3) snapped a 194:25 scoreless streak after being held scoreless in their last two games. However, it was the third consecutive game that Stevenson was outshot as the Cardinals (4-0) held a 19-11 advantage.

The visitors recorded the first seven shots of the game, including the first five on frame and from outside of the 18-yard box, but junior goalkeeper Tiffany McKee was there for the stops. McKee tied her season-high in saves in the opening nine minutes of the game and finished with nine.

McKee tallied her sixth and most impressive save of the first half after a long throw in for the Mustangs led to a counterattack for Catholic. McKee came off her line to collect a shot by Lindsay Aleman who finished with a game-high five shots.

Stevenson recorded its first shot in the 16th minute as freshman Juliana Portera got some space on the left side of the box but Ally Marcella was there to make one of her two saves. The Mustangs started to breakdown the Cardinals defense but were whistled for offsides twice in the half.

In the 26th minute, Taylor Pisk fought through the Stevenson defense before getting her feet free and ripping a shot just outside of the box that sailed over the reach of McKee to give Catholic a 1-0 lead.

Off a Cardinal corner, McKee got some help from her defense as juniors Brittney Celano and Morgan Cary cleared back-to-back shots off the line to keep the deficit at one. Catholic however broke through in the 38th minute with another goal from outside of the 18-yard box.

The Mustangs got their best scoring chance of the opening frame in the final minutes but a shot by freshman Brianna Christie sailed wide.

Stevenson got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute as Wittman ran onto a free kick by junior Shannon Ogrysko from beyond midfield and flicked it over Christina Peyroux who came on in the second half for Marcello.

Marcello came up with two huge stops late in the game, including in the 85th minute when Wittman flicked the ball back towards the goal off a corner kick. Marcello also came up with a stop in the final minute as she just got a hand on a header from junior Kailee Ziegler.

After falling behind 13-4 in shots in the opening half, the Mustangs outshot Catholic, 7-6 in the second frame. The hosts also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Stevenson returns to action on Friday, September 16 when the Mustangs host former CAC foe Frostburg State beginning at 7:00 p.m.
