Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Gillian Sawyer became the all-time leading goal scorer for St. Mary's (Md.) as her two second half goals lifting the visiting Seahawks over the Stevenson women's soccer team on a hot Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
With the win, the Seahawks (3-1) snapped a two-game losing streak versus their former CAC foe. The Mustangs (1-2) had won three of the previous four meetings, with the last meeting coming in September 2013.
The hosts had the first scoring chance as a header by senior Alexis Siejack looked to be going wide off a corner kick but a St. Mary's (Md.) defender was there to clear it off the line. The Mustangs had nine corner kicks in the game compared to just one for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks had a good look at the goal midway through the opening half but junior Tiffany McKee came way off her line to slide tackle a through ball out of the box. As McKee was retreating, Gabby Encarnacion took a shot but junior Shannon Ogrysko was there for the block.
In the final minute of the first period, sophomore Sam Hooker had a free kick from 50 yards out but her shot bounced in the box and hit the crossbar before going out of play.
Stevenson started the second half fast as freshman Kelsey Krupski got behind the defense but Sydney Larkin covered the ball before it came out. The Seahawks were able to clear the ball out before the Mustangs could get a shot on frame.
Sawyer nearly broke a scoreless tie in the 59th minute as Encarnacion took the ball to the end line before centering back to a wide open Sawyer, but her shot sailed high over the crossbar. Just five minutes later, the Seahawks had a breakaway but McKee came up with one of her five saves.
St. Mary's (Md.) got on the board in the 74th minute as Sawyer scored an unassisted tally that beat McKee to the far left post. She doubled the lead for the Seahawks in the 85th minute as she finished a through ball from Claire Kostelnik.
Stevenson continues its six-game home stand as the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Catholic on Wednesday, September 14 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
